How to Choose the Perfect Paint Colour for a Cosy Bedroom
Discover the colours and combinations that will generate calm and weave a cosy spell in your sleep space

The bedroom is a place for relaxation and sleep, so creating an inviting, restful and cosy atmosphere here is important. The perfect paint colours and decorating scheme will lend a soothing, cocooning feel to this space, and won’t risk stimulating the senses or jarring the eye just as it’s time to doze off.
We asked the experts at Dulux for tips on how to find the colours and tones that will bring instant calm to your bedroom, helping you destress, unwind and ease into sleep at the end of each day.

- Use warm-toned neutrals
Neutrals create a perfect unobtrusive backdrop in the bedroom, and warm tones rather than cool ones will boost the cosy, mellow atmosphere of the space. Go for toasty neutrals that contain hints of yellow, gold, brown and delicate pink.
- Using a deep shade on the lower two-thirds of the wall grounds this bedroom and delivers a cosy feeling. It’s topped off with a paler tone above, which adds a sense of lightness and height to the space.
- The walls are painted in Forest Shade with the softer Heart Wood up to the ceiling, both from Dulux.
Pick a dark shade
Deep, dark colours can work beautifully in a bedroom, providing a cocooning, nocturnal feel that suits the space perfectly and helps you switch off from the stresses of the day. Here, soft black creates a bold but calm mood.
Alternatively, opt for delicately tinted, smoky greys or go for deep teals and blues along with verdant mossy greens. All of these shades offer a wraparound, immersive feel to a bedroom and make a distinctive alternative to neutrals.

Be inspired by nature
Plunder nature’s palette for bedroom shades that bring calm and transform the space into a cosy sanctuary. The choice is vast.
At the paler end of the spectrum, choose raw linen, oyster and hessian shades, while darker colours inspired by nature’s raw ingredients include earthy browns, warm terracotta, cocoa and coffee.
Team them with natural and handmade accessories along with tactile fabrics to create a peaceful haven that is soothing to body and soul.

Use more than one colour
Creating a cosy atmosphere doesn’t mean dialling down on your design aspirations. Why not combine two colours in the room, rather than stick to one? This can add a rich, layered and interesting feel to the bedroom without compromising that cosy, soothing atmosphere.
You might paint a darker feature wall to frame the bed or paint the upper part of the wall and ceiling in a darker tone to make the room look more cocooned and intimate. Try shades of malted chocolate teamed with off-white or warming honey paired with soft sandy shades.
The ceiling is painted in Summer Pecan and the walls are in Gentle Moon, both from Dulux.
