Sweeping through abundant planting on both sides, a curved path leads from the terrace outside the house to the dining table at the back, where, until a year ago, a large unused home office occupied the sunniest part of this north-facing garden. Backing on to an old cemetery, the view belies the fact that this is a London garden close to the Thames at Mortlake.

Looking back into the garden, the cedar pergola with the swing was our visual anchor point. We used up lights to illuminate the large trees surrounding it to help frame it in view. The view is spectacular from the deck.

From under the new cabana area one has a perfect view out into the backyard oasis. The oversized flagstone pool deck allows for grass to grow in-between the stone and gives a soft edge to the pool. The raised spa nestled in the side of the planter wall and amongst the planting palette along the back of the property creates and intimate gathering area with a unique vantage point back towards the home. A poet once said “Time is nature’s way of keeping everything from happening all at once.” As this garden matures, it will flourish and create a rich, lush garden oasis.
Sustainable Kitchens
Birch Plywood Kitchen with recessed J handles and stainless steel recessed kick-board with a floating plywood shelf that sits above a splash back of geometric tiles. Plants, decorative and kitchen accessories sit on the shelf. The movable plywood island is on large orange castors and has a stainless steel worktop and contains a single oven and induction hob. The back of the island is a peg-board with a hand painted panel behind so that all the colours show through the holes. Pegs are used to hang toys and on. Orange and yellow curly cables provide the electrical connection to the oven and hob. The perimeter run of cabinets has a concrete worktop and houses the sink and tall integrated fridge/freezer and slimline full height larder with internal pull out drawers. The walls are painted in Dulux Noble Grey and Garden Grey. The flooring is engineered oak in a grey finish.

This home, built in 1920, is a quintessential Virginia Highland craftsman bungalow in intown Atlanta. The home underwent an extensive renovaton that included the addition of a screened porch and deck off the back, dormers on the second story in the front, and finishing out the basement level. Most interior spaces were updated including the kitchen, multiple bathrooms, a mudroom and laundry room.

This property has a wonderful juxtaposition of modern and traditional elements, which are unified by a natural planting scheme. Although the house is traditional, the client desired some contemporary elements, enabling us to introduce rusted steel fences and arbors, black granite for the barbeque counter, and black African slate for the main terrace. An existing brick retaining wall was saved and forms the backdrop for a long fountain with two stone water sources. Almost an acre in size, the property has several destinations. A winding set of steps takes the visitor up the hill to a redwood hot tub, set in a deck amongst walls and stone pillars, overlooking the property. Another winding path takes the visitor to the arbor at the end of the property, furnished with Emu chaises, with relaxing views back to the house, and easy access to the adjacent vegetable garden.

This space is effectively one giant pool zone. The geometric infinity edge pool/spa combination were designed with its relation and interaction with the home.Visually offering an urban resort style ambience.
A range of high quality materials and finishes were incorporated throughout.
All elements throughout the property were given detailed attention; boundary walls, raised planters, pool/spa, pool fencing and pool tiling.
Composite timber was used on the pool/spa deck for ease of maintenance. The boundary wall is charcoal aluminium slats which offer a great foil for the planting.
A bespoke fire pit area was designed looking out to the pool.
Lighting was a major inclusion in this design.
Entertaining a large number of family and friends is a regular way of life for this family. Therefore the relationship and functionality of the alfresco became paramount importance in the landscape design process.
Plants have been selected for their form, texture and size when maturity is reached. Plants provide living statements and soften the edges. Offering a lush green backdrop to the greys and charcoal palette of this project.
