Measure your garden and draw up a scaled plan. Indicate what areas will be hard scaping and what will be planted. Note where the sun is during the day and from what direction you have prevailing wind. You can do the research yourself or take your plan to a garden centre where someone on staff will be able to advise you. You can decide in advance what colours you'd like, i.e. soft pastels in pink, blue and violet or hot borders with reds, oranges and yellows. Good luck and enjoy your planning.

Two weeks after I met him for the first time, my boyfriend's best mate turned up at my place one Saturday, in overalls and proceeded to help me assemble my shed (my BF was at work). When I expressed gratitude for his coming to the aid of a relative stranger, he simply said "you're my mate's girlfriend, so you're my friend, and it helps that you're likeable". That last sounds so throwaway, but I was so anxious that my BF's friends wouldn't like me that I almost cried. He and my partner repaired my patio the next day, and they have done so much work on the house together over the last 2 years. He has refused any kind of payment, other than being fed, so I always make sure that Sunday Roasts, nice takeaways and good BBQs are always on the menu!

underfloor heating - have you done it?

We have recently purchased a new build with wet undlerfloor heating throughout, also a bungalow. We have engineered wood floor (floating) through whole house except for ensuite and bathroom which are ceramic tile. It does give a lovely even heat and you have the flexibility to control each room individually. You are correct that it is not super quick to respond because it is heating such a large surface area but this is not something I have found to be a problem at all. It only really gets moved up and down about 3 degress anyway. We have our bedroom very low because we like a cool room and this works well. Our house is 4 bedroom, approx 136 sqm and at the moment our heating and electric is working out at about £70 a month (this is for everything, no gas or anything on top of this) however, we do have airsource heat pump which adds further to efficiency of the heating. Also, if it is useful, the cost for us of the UFH installation was about £5500 but this was in new build and not retrofit. If you have a well insulated house I would go for it! :)
