We are moving into a new place and cannot redecorate for a while- the living room has a red carpet and the chimney breast is covered with floral purple modern wall paper.... how can I make this work? What colour sofa do I get? Bit worried :(
Reminds me of a long ago rental. Beautiful Victorian but the owner did the front room with flocked gold and white paper, red velvet drapes and red wall to wall. After the initial chuckle we purchased off white upholstered furniture, wood tables and a flatweave rug to fit over the red as much as possible. It wasn't long before we barely noticed, though everyone else who entered did a double take. The good part was that the windows were original and those drapes really helped with winter drafts. You will change it, so don't worry too much now. Thanks for bringing back a memory.
I would get the biggest area rug you can afford and take off the wallpaper, that is not expensive just work and as far as furniture neutral and something you will keep even after the red rug is gone.
photo? If you were feeling super bold you could go for green with red/purple - though it might blind you ;) I've included some other schemes that might work. But I'm with Patricia, just replace the paper, red and purple isn't a classic combination for a reason ;)
