I would go for greys and whites to give it a spacious feel. If light is an issue try elephants breath by F&B as it will warm the area. Remove all the paper and paint walls. I personally think the dado would look good in white and will match your doors. Panelling under the dado could also look good and wouldn't date. You could try a diy version as shown in pic as panelling is dear. The laminate in the hall looks good so would keep this and personally would go for a neutral colour on the stairs or even try a stripe. you could try blinds instead of curtains. I would also add a couple of big statement lights on the hall and landing. If you really want some wallpaper, then add a feature wall where the console table is or even at the top of the stairs to draw your eye upwards.

Hi Anna, I know it's a pain inheriting an outdated room but how exciting to make it your own! I think a scandi look would really energise and brighten this space too. I would reduce the bottom step too... and patch up the parquet floor with the same original flooring but from an other part of your house, that won’t be seen: from under the stairs? From inside a cupboard? Or maybe from where your sofa will be? From a bedroom you are going to carpet? Then you can patch up where you lifted the parquet with new one... even if not perfectly the same, it wouldn’t show!
