Black carpet
My style is more rustic/vintage with earthy warm colours which makes black carpet with white walls my worst nightmare!
Can anyone suggest how I can furnish this living room to make it more homely and warm.
Please see attached photos for how the previous tenants furnished this room - not my cup of tea

"Refreshing" the main staircase
Comments (8)I'm wondering about blocking in the bannisters with T&G which is in keeping with the doors in the cottage, plus getting a new handrail made in a mid coloured timber. I've painted most of the beams and "half timbered" exposed wood in an off white matte gloss, it's made the room a lot lighter .. past owners have just ladled on the thick black matte paint that seems to be de riguer ... we bought an Old Charm Dutch dresser off eBay, and I have a couple of old oak armchairs, plus a 1950's Cintique fireside chair. And the dining chairs are a hotchpotch of junk shop finds. Comments (5)Here it is (colour is off in the photo, I went for dark oak mixed with a teeny bit of red). As you can see the gaps in my planks are bigger. I can’t say I’ve noticed any draughts tbh, I thought that tended to occur on the ground floor although Jonathan is wiser than I about such things! You can buy plank fillers like draughtex if needed but yet to test it. Comments (13)The walls are blue but one is almost entirely filled with a wardrobe, bookcases etc which are white, so is the ceiling. I think you’re right about keeping the window treatment quite simple because then we could always change the accent colour. Comments (2)Your need for storage makes perfect sense. However that unit does dominate the room and with glazed doors looks cluttered. If you aren't a fan of it then there are other options. For instance, I've used an up-cycled dresser which looks smart but does take up space. To create more room, can you make use of the alcove storage and maybe get a carpenter to build into the rest of that space? Is there another area in the house such as under the stairs that could be used? Both these options would free up space for family seating. As for painting the walls, light neutrals won't always make a low light room look brighter. A sage green for instance might give the space depth and character....See More

8 years agoAdd a large bright rug, pale grey sofa and pale curtains - or even better a plain blind. You could pick a really natural fibre rug like Jute or Sisal with an edged border to blend in with the carpet or another colour that you can pick out with the furnishings like this. The great thing about investing in a rug and furnishings is that you get to take them with you!

8 years agoIf this were my house... i'd start by investing in some colourful items such as cushions or nice striking artwork for the walls ... even some nice big indoor plants... things that wont cost too much but make the room pop with colour against the black.
Personally i think the round rug on the carpet looks ok but i'd replace it with a coloured one... perhaps like this.. but depends on your taste.
i'd not recommend a big rug as that might just look odd.
