Comments (8)That looks like Anaglypta wallpaper which is usually painted over. Painted wallpaper is quite an effort to remove but if you hire a wallpaper stripper it will make it easier....See MoreRemoving paint found under wallpaper
Comments (7)Yes you can just paint over it. It’s very unusual to remove paint - would normally only be done on woodwork if it was in very bad condition or if you wanted to strip it back to the wood. Never known anyone to take paint off walls. If it’s very dark and you want a paler colour on top you may need 3 coats, depending on the brand of paint you use. Comments (4)There was probably a fireplace there that was removed. The idea is a vent helps to stop damp although opinion is divided about if this actually works. It will feel like there is a draft as this hole is big but if you put a grill on it the airflow will be reduced to a trickle. Search online for fireplace vents....See MoreTEMP DUMP
