Hi-we've recently revamped our kitchen/dining room area and added a patio door in the dining room - see pics attached. We have also painted all walls white now but would like to make one feature wall with a bright vibrant colour any ideas or would you keep the walls white? Would love your help. Louise

A colored backsplash would be lovely. Patterned panel curtains. A big framed poster at the back above the counter wall or some white shelves with colored storage jars/tins on it. I'd go for bright colored decoration and leave the walls white.

Hello Louise, if you want to create a focal point in the room then a feature wall is the way to go. There are some amazing ways to add some fun to the wall by either introducing a striking wallpaper, or some geometric tiles origami style, a contrasting paint colour or, shelves. Shelves are not only practical but also a fantastic platform to display items together (like vases, photos, books etc ... etc...) to create a visual impact! If you have children, then have you thought about adding a blackboard? Here are some images to inspire you ... hope it helps!

Definitely. My original kitchen was developer’s kitchen —ie, it photographed well but did not function. The only place to put a table in the kitchen itself would have been in front of the back door, which is itself a natural thoroughfare from the open plan living room. Now I have a lovely breakfast bar/peninsula facing the brightest part of the kitchen, and I can easily spend hours there over breakfast, brunch or coffee. Dinner I tend to eat in front of the tv, and when I’ve visitors the main table in the dining room is used.

Love your kitchen, you’ve done a great job, not only does the kitchen look good, it’s totally practical, drawers are the way forward, even if they are more expensive than cupboards. I’ve just redone a kitchen in a house we rent out, the old one was finally falling apart. I was going to go to Howdens and use the joiner etc we knew, but in the end we used a small local company, which cost us £300 more, but the quality of their interior cabinets and doors was so outstanding, plus they could do everything, including tiling, we went with them. We didn’t change the floor, but did everything necessary, I’m hoping it lasts well and our tenants look after it!

@kazzh Adding a wall as suggested by HU won't allow for the intention of an open plan with the living room as and adding a wall by the current opening will remove a lot of afternoon light from the living room. Adding the laundry to the pantry is certainly possible, it's an idea that has been considered, but we didn't know a) how possible it was to create a new waste pipe and where to run to, possibly the bathroom next door. b) how to position the pantry area to consider a reduced length of waste pipe to avoid a mass of disruption of other units ie cutting holes in them. Moving the patio door isn't impossible, as we can just brick up the current and add a window, then add a patio door to the extension. Thank you so much so far!

Hello, ah we are having the same dilemma on the same wall (presume I knocked through into the dining room?)

I've just downloaded a dulux ap which you hold up to the wall and you can 'paint' it different colours to see what it would look like. It's not perfect but fun to play around with.

Is the room North/south facing?

Wallpaper will of course give you a lot more ideas and you can get some really fun designs if that's the style you want.

How about a few option for the back wall? I think either a coffee (or tea) station or a wine bar would be great there! Have a look at these pics, which one inspires you?

Hi Louise

I agree you need to add something wow now because the room is ready for it. I'm inspired by your choice of white grouting in the floor tiles and I think, if I were standing in your room, I would advise you look towards the dining room wall and where the floor tiles run up to it create grey stripes that run up the wall to the ceiling. Perhaps measure it out by alternate rows - so grey/white/grey/white - if you follow me? Just use paint to give this wall a vertical wow, it will be very striking.
