dark slate tiles drain light in kitchen...what can i do?

i have dark tiles, warm white walls in my country kitchen, it feels dark...is it best to put a shine on the tiles to reflect any light?

Would look to use a rug for the dining area to disrupt the darker floor. Would be wary of putting a gloss finish on the floor, as surface treatments tend to wear quicker in certain areas leaving a patchy finish, along with the increased risk of creating a slip hazard ?

If you want to paint, paint. I think I'd agree with the people who suggest professional re spraying though unless you love diy and love the idea of being able to change the colour yourself relatively quickly. I recently painted a dresser (heavily stained and varnished wood, nowhere near as nice as yours) and a chest of drawers (bog standard orange pine) and unless you can take the wood right back it takes coats and COATS and a lot of patience to get a good finish. It is worth it though! Personally, I'd go for a greyish blue on the bottom half, White worktops, and paint the uppers the same white as the tiles (there's nothing intrinsically wrong with them, a classic choice that won't date). Put in a steel splashback behind the cooker (it should be possible to fit over tiles) to tone with your handles and a hard wearing natural fibre rug on the floor to break up the dark grey. A few wood accessories and the usual bits and pieces to finish.

You'll get more responses if you repost this in the design dilemas bit. There's no images or dimesions to go from but here's my thoughts, bearing in mind budget is a big consideration: - Kitchen Leave the windows as they are, you can create a sense of light with reflective materials and light colours. Leave the slate floor - it's hardwearing and easy to clean You could try replacing just the cupboard door fronts, as long as the carcasses themselves are in good shape - if budget doesn't allow then you could paint them a pale grey instead to match the floor. Replace the work surfaces with a light counter top. Shop around for appliances - there are some great places local to me that do slight seconds, you can grab a bargain and often it's just there's a scratch on the side or top where you won't see it anyway. Bathroom There are some great space saving bathroom ideas out there . Some people don't mind not having a bath but bear in mind you could reduce your appeal to some renters if you take it out and you'll definitely reduce the property's saleability (this may not worry you if you're in it for the long term). Ask a local estate agent for their advice - they'll know the local market better. thanks all! The vanity was made to measure. Just a wooden floating frame which we covered in tiles. Couldn't find a vanity to fit as this was less than 300 deep and about 1100 wide. The tiles we got from a company in Preston called ROCCIA www.roccia.com - they also have a place in Bolton but not sure if they deliver outside of the area. The tile was called Pantheon Marble (antique) by Cerim. Not found any other suppliers. Comes from Italy in all size formats. I got the 300 x 600 and they did them for about £45psqm. Similar ones we found from Mandarin stone were almost identical but didn't have quite as many streaks in. In fact I bought a full sized sample and had to use some of it for the skirting behind the WC and you can't really tell the difference at that angle. They are on sale now so a similar price (they were almost £60 psqm when i looked to buy them!) https://www.mandarinstone.com/product/mimica-sepia-grey-matt/ they are mostly grey but in some lights at a certain time of day, they can have just the very very slightest brown tinge but it's barely noticeable either.

Drain pipes never seem to blend in! A thought would be to paint to blend the pipes to the color of the walls, or white, rather than black. But overall, the more natural rock and cream looks great, and in the duller winter months be brighter than a grey scheme. As suggested, giving the door a white surround will tie it to the windows, yet provide a strong contrast. Do that and you might find the whole facade feels more connected and less in need of a total overhaul.
