Kitchen Tiles - Trim Alternative Ideas Please!

Hi there

We are having the chimney breast in our kitchen tiled with metro tiles. The tiles will have to be cut to fit the width and so we've been advised to include a trim around the corner edges of the chimney breast. We really don't want this but is there a way to avoid it or are there any alternatives?

Thanks for your help.

I ended up going with a sage metro tile and found a trim to match the grouting which works really well. The extra detail provided by the tiles adds something to the kitchen and makes the chimney breast stand out - which I think works well in a Victorian house.

An alternative could be glass splashbacks. Or choose a really expensive trim - brushed stainless steel looks very smart.

We have a glass splashback and really comes in use when it comes to cleaning. It fitted our requirements as we could chose our own colour.

If you have granite work top or you having an upstand around the counter so you will not need tiles around the splash back. Keep the floor tiles neutral as these are a big expense and not easily changed. You can then add colour with paint & possibly a feature wall, these are much less expensive to change & you can easily create a wow factor. Good luck

Yes Compac offer Glace (matte), Polished, Concrete (Matte & slightly textured but only available in the Concrete collection), Ovo (Honed) & Pergamo (Brush & Hammered). The Ovo and Pergamo are special order and aren't available on all colours so this is something you would have to check if you see a colour you like. Caesarstone have 3 finish choices: Polished, Honed (Matte) and Viento (textured). Again you would have to check the chosen colour with Caesarstone to see if its available in the finish you like. This question was asked within the past week and from recollection the general consensus was to not have tiled window sills. In my experience tiles on a windows sill get really dirty in the grout lines from constant wiping. Either opt for the worktop material or a timber sill.

I am also in same camp as not liking tile trims. I do think that they cheapen the effect overall. However, they are a necessity to seal the edges. We are in the midst of tiling an ensuite and bathroom and faced with thinking there was not choice, hubby suggested a corian. I think due to the fact that we matched the travertine tiles so well with the wide choice available, has given a very subtle effect and your eye is just drawn to the tile and not the trim. It also looks super expensive too.

Hi, can't stand tiles either and subway tiles are too fussy looking. This kitchen looks sleek with clean lines those tiles will not go at all. I have only ever had an upstand to match the worktop and always paint walls in a wipeable soft sheen pain, don't be put off with the soft sheen bit, it's not shinny at all. This paint doesn't stain and anything can be wiped off of it. Will try to upload pic of my kitchen, it's a work in progress at the min tho. Xx

Check out Schlüter for tile trims, they have a great range in numerous colours & finishes. Not the cheapest but you pay for what you get!

We had the same issue... No one seems to do corner edging tiles anymore (ie tiles that "wrap around" the corner)... After literally weeks of searching we ended up having to use trim.. Went for expensive metal... But i still hate it. The only other thing we considered was a pencil edging tile... Have a look at them...

You can paint the edge of the tiles if it meets the wall in the wall colour to blend it in.

If it's where two tiles meet on the edge I would recommend a stainless steel corner bead.

Soft sheen is a particularly naff finish if your After wipe able paints try something professional such as diamond eggshell which is scrubbable

I agree it looks good without tiles as it is a very sleek style of kitchen, could you use glass which is colour matched to the upstands?
WHat extractor hood do you have fitted by the way? I need to get one for a chimney breast like yours.

I have to strongly disagree with Matthew, soft sheen, has almost no sheen and is very easily to clean and scrub too, having kids and pets I know this only too well. Eggshell looks rubbery! :(

What about just tiling the back wall of the chimney (in the alcove/opening) and simply leaving the side walls painted? That way you get tiles but no trim AND keep it more "minimalist" which seems to be popular

Hi jips,

I think the easiest and best option is to carry on with your worktop as the backsplash and quite simply paint your walls into it. It will be very easy to look after and will suit better with the modern feel you are going for

If it has a rubbery finish it was probably applied to thickly. Soft sheen is almost never used anymore. I have 2 young children and my entire home is white eggshell, guess what - no mess. I decorate rooms in every single finish, every day of the year so don't take it personally but soft sheen is naff, as is silk in my professional opinion.

That's you're opinion Matthew and you are entitled to it. I'm on my seventh personal home and have never used anything else and never will and it's far from 'naff' !

Hi,
I agree that trims don't look good.
If you opt for a porcelain tile then it is possible to cut a tile and then re polish the cut edge with a stone polishing kit. The same way that they polish the edge on a granite work surface. You can buy a kit from the likes of screw fix, you also need a grinder.
This then allows you to have a neat finished edge.
Having said all that I would look into a smoked mirror splash back as it's much more contemporary and easy clean.

I would use a glass back splash in the alcove only and not on the front or sides as you already have matching counter and up stands.

Stunning. I love what you have done. I too have subway tiles like this, but have used this sagey green for two walls. I wish I had an Island though. Am well jell! Enjoy!
