Hi Jogg2, the timber species of the treads on our 'Classic Stair 21' is Spotted Gum.

Hi this is my stairs, been really happy with this, the colours are a mix of Browns, greys, blues and greens so could suit your colour scheme. It's not too 'in your face' as the stripes are very fine and I think would work with your flooring which I think is quite subtle anyway. It's by Manx Carpets, coastline in punch & judy colour way. I think it was £30 a sq metre, so less than half the price of crucial carpets (designer at Manx used to work for crucial apparently. http://www.manxcarpets.co.uk/product/coastline/

The floating staircases are called "cantilever" staircases, they generally require a structural wall because they are steel plates bolted to the wall and clad in whichever timber you like and most popular balustrade would be glass, so they will not suit all house types, the split level staircase, with the landings are easier to produce and can fit in most house types and are still very contemporary, I am also a fan or the curved staircases because I understand the work involved but i would suggest the curved staircase would be more suited to a traditional house type.

I would go for half and half approach as per jmcdi, painting the panelling below in keeping with rest of hallway and keeping the large newel posts, balusters, handrails and diagonal bottom section (not sure of its proper name) as they are. The only other option might be to try and remove a bit of the dark varnish from the stairs and see what colour the wood comes up naturally, it could be oak underneath the stain? However if it turned out to be lovely and you went for stripping the whole thing this would be a messy, long and potentially costly process. Best of luck, keep us posted!
