POLL: How often do you change your cutting board?
Comments (40)I never, ever change mine. I use a butcher block and a huge thick wooden cutting board, only taking care to keep my fruits from suddenly tasting like onions or garlic. Studies have shown that a wooden cutting board is naturally resistant to bacteria, so I scrape and then wash mine off with soap and water after use. All this absurd paranoia about cleanliness is the product of marketing, not science, and the supposedly more sterile plastic ones are actually much better petri dishes for bacterial growth, which is why they must be cleaned and disposed of regularly. Fine if you want to keep plastic cutting board manufacturers in China working, but not at all safer or cleaner....See MorePOLL: How do you keep your kitchen knives?
Comments (15)We keep all of our sharp knives in their own drawer, which has a magnetic bar to keep them in place and to stop them from rubbing on each other and losing their edge. I can't bear too much clutter out on the worktop. Besides, if a murdering maniac bursts in, I don't want to make it too easy for him. I'd like to think by the time, he's opened all the drawers to find the knives, the police will have arrived. LOL...See MoreDo you keep your toiletries on display?
Comments (24)I have cupboards under and next to the basin so there is lots of out of sight space for spares. I do keep what I need daily on the surface next to the basin but they are in glasses in a colour that goes with the room and I've arranged them slightly artily so they look considered, not haphazard. That's my view - people who visit my house might think differently! Thinking about it, many of my friends keep everything hidden. When I had my loft converted in my previous home, the architect gave me a very pretty bag to take all my daily stuff in and out of the bathroom - the message was, keep them out of sight. Only remembered that right now. I think I'll have to rethink my routines!...See MoreHow do you keep your home cool in the summer?
Comments (7)Speaking from London I copy the habits of hot countries. Blinds have to be down before the sun hits the windows, then open the windows through the flat, not necessarily so much on the side being hit on the sun. Create a through draft from front to back, obviously windows have to be shut when you are out but leave blinds down or curtains closed then too. I have an old mansion flat and live on the ground floor so there are some inbuilt advantages from the solid walls and position. Energy required, me walking backwards and forwards closing blinds and opening and shutting windows. With the forecasts of ever increasing energy prices and warmer climate we need to design in low energy cooling methods as well as heating. In the future we may need to use our chimneys to bring in cold air at night to cool buildings as is done traditionally in the middle east....See MoreFeioi
