Ideas for a very small garden
Comments (19)Love Jens bike storage and it ticks another box since if you keep herbs up there they will get even more sun and easier not to forget to water them. Think you can create a little courtyard effect in your space and it will be fab. I can’t post pics but I’ve just saved a pic to my ideabook called DISCUSSION that shows an incredible simple “pergola” that would probable span the depth of your space. If you did this it would create something for the eye to look up to and take away focus from fence being close. And it would be something to attach solar lanterns to or hanging herb baskets or decorating bunting for birthday parties even. Plus you could train a climber up it without risking the climber taking over and blocking too much light as it might with a normal pergola. Anyhow just an idea!...See MoreTree/plant ideas for privacy in small garden
Comments (3)Most trees will grow too tall and will encroach through a brick wall easily. I had to remove a beautiful Silver Birch as it grew to 50 feet and was breaking up my neighbours concrete path. I had little garden knowledge then but I’ve learnt a lot since then! How about a fruit tree like an apple? You get nice white/pale pink blossom followed by delicious apples in the autumn. Apples are grown on different root stocks to limit their size. A true Apple tree can become huge but one grown on Rootstock M9 grows no higher than 10 ft. I bought one online from Blackmoor Fruit Growers www.blackmoor.co.uk and it is a beautiful tidy tree. Shrubs would also be good, many of them grow 6-8 feet and are good for screening. Shrubs like Viburnum tinus, Photinia red robin and Ceanothus are all evergreen. They do flower but flowers are small and not too messy. Two shrubs I love as they have purple leaves is Cotinus and Sambucus nigra but they do lose their leaves in winter. A lot of people use bamboo as screening but I’ve never grown it so can’t comment. I’m sure you will get more ideas from the gardening Houzzers! Comments (8)An orchard garden sounds great and yes a small hill or mound would be fab for kids. I have a small mound on the side of my garden (remnants of an old compost heap) and my boy and dog love it:). To make one should be fairly easy with some rubble or infill soil ( ask local council, recycling centers or building sites and some may sell earth that is screened from weeds), compact it then add topsoil, compact that, then add turf. A more ambitious project could be to make the hill like hobbit hole complete with cute little door but this would need some sort of solid structure to add the earth on top. Anyway here’s some ideas (click pics to enlarge)....See MoreSmall 6x9 garden ideas
Comments (10)Third time lucky! The most awkward bit is the steps because you need access, so if budget allows I think a raised platform with steps down on one side may work. Something like the photo below. My first thought was replace the grass with a circular patio, creating a courtyard vibe. If it’s sunny there, then even better. The bamboo looks great and seem to create excellent privacy. You can then add shade loving plants such as Japanese Maples, Hydrangeas and Ferns. Sunnier spots can be planted up with roses, lavender, grasses and hardy Geraniums. Here’s some ideas...See More- 9 years ago
