Too much sun!

It's a nice problem to have I admit but I think our South facing rooms which will both have bi-folds covering nearly the whole wall will be too hot and the sun will fade the (desired) walnut floor and furnishings.
We've only just started building the house so any thoughts on awnings, type of glass, colour schemes, blinds or anything really would be most welcome.

Speak to the door people and see if you can have glass that blocks out harmful rays

How about curtains? They're not the typical office accesory but may help... You could also paint the sill and frame, etc in a dark colour to reduce glare.

Too much yellow on too many walls

White, black, chocolate, and strangely enough also stone/ pale taupe ( in small quantities) are looking well with the newly yellow walls in our sitting room, metals used in the room are gold and some antiqued brass: both warm like the yellow itself. But also I have seen bursts of orange looking good with yellow on Houzz. Or more traditionally blues and whites have always looked well with yellow.

Hi Emily, I recently had a Velux 14” rigid tube one installed in my shower room which has no windows. It is brilliant and lets in plenty of light even on an overcast day. The light fitting gives a similar level of light at night. The cost depends a lot on the amount of tube needed - mine was £450 from roofing superstore who were really helpful and gave lots of advice. I can’t say about fitting as it was part of a bigger job, but was apparently easy for my builder to fit within a day and wasn’t done as part of re-roofing. Hi Emily congratulations on your home and the work you have done so far I almost feel like your home needs to have its entrañce defined. I feel it lacks the welcoming of a proper entrance. i have attached a couple pics foe for inspiration. I think ot could really benifit from a great porch entry and nice landscaping.

Hiya,

Blinds could help to combat this problem. Thermal blinds could really help - they have a honeycomb like structure to help maintain a comfortable temperature in the home. Special coatings can also help to reflect the sun.

If a Pleated thermal blind isn't your thing though, whatever blind you choose will help minimise fading of your furniture when pulled down, so it's really up to you!

You can think of installing a glass veranda or retractable patio awning that will not only solve your issue, but will surely enhance and beautify your house.

Thank you Zoe and Edenverandas that's given me food for thought and I will be investigating both options. With blinds, do voile blinds make any difference or do they need to be more substantial?

You could use guardian sn62/34 great glass solar control excellent U-values and neutral looking

You can get glass with a filter or in-built blinds. Make sure you get vents in the door frames and if possible some opening windows. We have a roll-out awning at home that is great. Also, outside you can add a pergola or something similar to grow vines or other creepers, these will give shade in the summer but less cover and more light in the winter. Have fun!

I have a similar problem. Doing some research for myself, I came along this and I might give it a try. As far as I know, this shading system comes from Germany and looks quite promising for me...

Thank you everyone for all your helpful comments. I had thought of a pergola funnily enough as we had one at our old house, although this will take a while to set up.
James, that German shading system looks great for a glass roof. Our glass is only in the doors though, we have a solid ceiling so looks like your need is greater than ours :-)
The special glass is definitely a great option but we need to look into it as the company whose doors we like only offer one type of glass and they are the only company that do that style of door :(
