Victorian Wood Floor

My Husband and I recently pulled up the existing flooring in our little Victorian terraced house and we are looking to sand and oil the floorboards. We found these tiles where there would have been a fireplace in our Dining Room, however now there is a radiator and we can't decide whether to scrub and keep the tiles or pull them up and continue the flooring with some replacement boards from a reclamation yard. Thoughts please!

Hi, I think the answer depends on how much hard work you are prepared to do, and how competent you and your husband are at DIY, or maybe you may have a family member who can help?
However I would go down the route of reclaimed boards.

Hi. I'd also get reclaimed boards unless of course you want to reinstate the fireplace?! That may not be as expensive as you think but it would also mean moving the radiator. Good luck, im sure the floorboards will look fantastic once done!

In my experience it will look better finished if you had the same timber throughout, as pine & oak can look mismatched sometimes (they are close enough in colour but yet not the same). But it depends on the colour of the pine doors, it may work.

My original kitchen floor was tatty floorboards, so we had the floor completely boarded with ply (I think) - this created a good solid base, and then we had dark grey slate effect porcelein tiles laid on top. Or you could lay a wooden floor over the floorboards all the way through, or lay LVT or wood effect porcelein tiles over the boarded floor throughout. Lots of options are possible.

We inherited a supposed "dual fuel" stove with our house. We have had it swept and maintained properly, but it was pointed out that the lining of the chimney was not of the required standard for dual fuel - only for wood !! It had been done 'on the cheap' ... We decided to use it instead of central heating if/when we were both at home, and opened the doors on the ground floor so heat could circulate. It does a good job of that ! We started off burning wood, but soon realised that it had to bve 'fed' almost every couple of hours - wood burns through very quickly. We've used coal recently, and find that much better, as it only needs making up a couple of times during the day. It's OK as long as we don't mix fuel, apparently. We know it's probably not the best environmentally, but couldn't afford to put in something like a heat source pump.

I’d start by talking to the carpet shop - I’m sure they will have seen every type of issue like this. We have a similar threshold on our landing - but instead of having a folded edge (something I’ve not seen before), we have a brass threshold / edging strip. You can get edging strips with different profiles, so a carpet shop will be able to show you a few. This is ours - it looks quite chunky in the close up picture, but in reality it is barely noticeable and gives a neat edge.

Thanks for the replies. We struggled to get reclaimed boards in the right size, so got some cut which were close enough. They were a little lighter in colour even once stained but should hopefully blend over time. After shot...
