Different rocks on each side of a dry creek bed ?

Hello

I am trying to design the front yard of a small rental house. I will have a dry creek bed (grey rocks) going from the back of the house to the sidewalk.
I want to cover the area with rocks on each side of the bed and have some ground cover plants that will eventually cover part of the rocks.
Do you think it would look ok to put different color rocks on each side of the bed ? It seems that one type of rock would be too uniform. Maybe black lava on one side and salt and pepper rocks on the other side.
Any suggestions welcome. This is in the central valley of California.

We are from Pennsylvania and we are not familiar with California's landscape styles. We basically look at dry river beds in the area, observe how they look then match the design with the natural setting. You could try this too, its always good to look at the area then match the landscape so that way the landscape actually looks like it belongs there. Hope this helps!

Tani I really love your cabinet it adds so much warmth to the room with the dark navy and I don't feel it clashes with your floor at all. I like your animal skin rug but perhaps a larger one in Tan and creamy white would help pull the woodwork, metal vase and floor together and give it nice balance. Not sure what colours you like but you could try some velvet or textured oranges with the navy as the tones are similar to the wood and then add some neutral beige or cream with it. Have you tried your mirror above your new cabinet it may help the balance with the TV one the opposite side. I feel a mantle peace will make a difference in white or antique white. Then add a canvas or painting that has all the tones you decide on in your room with some strong accent colours like the orange with the greens and yellows from your other rooms that will tie the two together. What ever you decide on I'm sure you will have fun. Take your time and good luck, most of all have some fun with it.

I love how you've kept the character alive in a tasteful eclectic mix. I think you may like a splash of colour in the bathroom by adding a canvas roman blind in a bold teal with a coordinating runner rug and some luxurious towels. A wall mounted rack for folded towels above the loo, will interrupt the monotone of the wall as may a plant or some. Also some woven floor baskets or quirky toiletpaper or magazine container to add interest.

We have just purchased what we hope to be our last house. It is a very big plot and we are looking to knock down and get planning for a very large house over 4 floors. (12,000 sq ft). We know what we want internally however our issue lies with the external look and feel. My wife wants classic new build, with pillar entrance, sash box windows with stone cills or surroundings (Surrey Commuter belt!). I like contempory white, modern, square, glass walls, feature cladded walls with balconies (Beverly Hills!) Our compromise is classic at the front contempory at the rear. We need help! Was also going to say that is an impressive list. Much more than I can get hold of 🙂 and I agree that it depends on how much sun or shade the border gets. Which direction does the back of the house face? Had a good look through the list and a lot are seasonal bedding plants such as the lobelia, petunia, marigolds and so on which can still be useful to fill areas whilst the perennials settle in. I’ve compiled a shortlist of what I think could work well assuming it gets a fair amount of sun but even then in my experience choosing plants can be hit and miss. Some may take well while others may not. Primula and polyanthus might prefer a shadier position but it’s my experience that they’ll grow anywhere. Osteopermum, nice plant but better if you’re down south, mine died off in a sharp frost. Peony (slow growing). Risky but a nice plant if it takes well. Platycodon (Bellflowers or campanula), some can grow very tall but some are alpine variety so choose wisely. Lithodora, Cistus (silver pink), Aubretia, Lewisia, Saxifraga, Armeria Thrift, Arenaria, Arabis, Senetti are all rock/alpine plants I think and should do well in that border and won’t grow to high. They‘re quite often used in basket and container arrangements. The Cistus (or rock rose) is one of my favourite plants. Two others that struck my interest are Deutzia Rosea which looks like it stays compact and Andromeda. I’m assuming it’s Andromeda polifolia ‘compacta’ (bog rosemary). Looks lovely and one for my own list. 😊 If you want some taller shrubs/ plants do a little more research as there some good options there. Hope this helps. x

you refer to "grey rocks" but I don't see them. In order to answer the question about whether specific rocks will look good, I think you need to show samples of them.

As a professional landscape designer, I recommend using a cream colored mixture of different sizes and a variation of cream from pebbles to river rocks, stones, to larger boulders possibility.

Look at the local streambeds and copy them. Unless you find local black lava streambeds, don't try to make it work in your yard unless you are going for a totally modernistic unnatural look.

For a natural look, vary the size of the rocks, with some big ones anchoring the bends and interrupting the "stream", with smaller rocks.
