Need design ideas for my Lounge.

I have just moved and my lounge is 600 x410 which makes it awkward to put furniture. I am intending to have doors down the right hand side so only have 3 walls but can't decide whether to have a corner sofa or 2 separate and don't have much vision. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Its hard to imagine without any pictures. However, its obviously long and narrow so here are some tips for making a room feel wider! If you place two sofas opposite eachother that creates an illusion of width. Also if you paint the two end walls a darker colour that can make it feel wider. Stick with light colours on the walls to make it feel brighter and wider. Placing a mirror in the centre of one of the long walls can also help, as can having a large rug in the centre of the room. Always light a room from three corners where possible, use lamps. Hope this helps!

Have you thought of rearranging the furniture so the tv isn't the focal point? Furniture against walls can make a room appear smaller. If the budget permits I would add a coffee table to bring furniture into the middle of the room. I would also add a mirror to the dining area to bounce light and maybe install a low hanging pendant light over the table. I would also choose a neutral coloured rug as using a single colour for an item becomes the focal point. Grey is a good modern neutral for walls. If you want to use paper on a smaller wall choose a small pattern that won't date unless you don't mind repapering to keep it up to date. There are some really fantastic papers around at the moment such as chinoiserie, bold contemporary and typography but it depends on your preferred style? Maybe use plain (not patterned as this may date or your taste will change) velvet or silk curtains to soften the room. Use different colours and textures for the accessories to avoid block colours as per comment above. Pattern/interest can also be added in the form of wall art.

Hi thanks very much for the useful hints and tips, they've really helped! So far I've done a subtle re-jig of the decorative items on the shelves and thinned them out a bit to make it less busy (and more contemporary). I have added a cushion and throw plus a bit more useful storage baskets and so far I'm happier with it now. I also have to consider the overall flow of the room rather than 1 wall - for example when I walk into the room this wall is on the left and the sofa wall is on the right, and there was a risk that if I added shelves etc on this wall it would then unbalance the look of the room as the sofa walls are so far pretty plain. I'm getting a new sofa next month and when this arrives I'll be able to see the room in its finished form and can make any last minute adjustments!! I want to add some more shiny stuff and will get a nice chrome tray or centrepiece for my glass coffee table. Pffft, this house decor lark can take over your life sometimes :))

Hi. Which way does the room face? How many do you want to seat for dining, will you have a tv and is the fire off centre or is that the photo angle? I'd ideally keep dining by the door and the sofas arranged around the fire. Depending on orientation I think light blue or blue with a grey undertone work well with biscuit shades. This colour is farrow and ball light blue, their skylight may also work or little Greene Bone china blue. I've just looked at this before and after shot on houzz and think something similar to this scheme could work well in your room with touches of red, gold, white curtain poles and pale biscuit curtains and the room also has a tufted coffee table/footstool which would work well with your sofas. I'd also look at the position of the pendant lights. I'd probably go for an L shape sofa position so one opposite the fire and the other opposite the door. You can add a console behind the sofa and a round table for lamps in between the sofas. It will give enough room to walk past and should look fine visually but try it with cardboard boxes on the floor if possible

I would personally have linear storage/ shelves the whole wall, with bench/ sideboard closed storage along on floor ... to store books, tv, electronic stuff, toys, decorative objects ... even maybe have a little bench area for kids .... difficult to explain, so I attached photos! Would be so practical whilst beautiful! Ps: try not to put the tv on wall, but rather on a low furniture!!
