How can I soften down this brickwork chimney?

We will be renovating our kitchen early next year and we are having a solid wood kitchen fitted painted in Ivory-bone colour paint, with marble worktop.
The Aga and surrounding brickwork are staying put, but the brickwork is a very dominant feature in the kitchen that I really want to tone down. Do I tile the splash back and white wash the sides and top of the chimney. Or get the plasterer to plaster the whole thing and leave the wooden beam as the main feature? Help
