granite or corian worktops?

Hi, I've heard lots of opinions on this and cannot decide. I've heard granite can stain easy and crack, but that corian scratches easily. Any advice? anyone who chose one and regrets? would you recommend your choice after you've lived with it for a while?

I've just bought a corian. Main reason was aesthetics with no joins and it suited my modern white kitchen, however it does have its drawbacks - it can burn, melt and scratch. It can be sanded back and repaired easily though.

Granite is probably a more practical and hard wearing option.

We've had a dark granite in our kitchen for 13 years. No problem as far as we're concerned.

Just had a bathroom worktop installed though which scratched when I moved a plant pot. Admittedly it wasn't marketed as a kitchen worktop material but I'm very disappointed.

Hello haylescakes, I think it just need a bit of care.. I would definitely not mix it.. Granite, like Marble or any other luxury stone, even woods do need some attention.. I have bamboo and that too requires a bit of effort.... Wiping down and a regular re oil.. However I think it is really really worth it. Also it does last and would definitely look all the better for the little bit of effort.. I also made several chopping boards with off cuts!! Gr8 way to use up the material and useful too! For colours I would look to finding something lighter than black.. I think you could really go for something amazing... Firstly though think of the colours in the kitchen... If it's a blank canvas, so to speak and any colour would work... Ie you have white worktops... Then really go for something striking... I have just found a few colours from a company online that are quite interesting..I'd say do some research into pricing and ask for samples.. Or visit a showroom to get an idea... Get as many samples as you need before deciding.. I think the more natural looking as possible... Some of them can look manufactured.. You could also add a small splash back panel.. Narrow is quite tasteful, the have a really chalky matt paint on the walls and matt paint for the cupboards..... Lastly think of finish.. squared off edges are in my eyes more tasteful.. but you can look at that and decide what you like the look of :)) Cosmic black... Siena BordeauxVerde MarinaceKinawa

There are a huge range of worktop options available, we have a large range of Granites and Quartz. Silestone, Ceasarstone, Cimstone, Quartzforms, Compac and Technistone are just a few Quartz brands that we offer. They all have websites where you can view colours available and request samples. If white is what you are looking for then these Quartz brands do have some lovely colour options.

There are so many factors involved. These include proximity to sink and hob that will generate greater dirt, maintaining symmetry etc. For a larger kitchen you could possibly get away with only having upstands to the rear, but if there is a sink/drainer in close proximity, I would still avoid. A 5 inch high upstand does seem quite high, but this is entirely down to personal choice.

If we made your kitchen, then most probably yes. But the answer is to ask whoever supplied/fitted your kitchen and get it in writing. The weakest places are generally around the joints and cutouts

After reading an article about the pros and cons of all types or worktop, we went for black sparkly corian (quartz). Reason was that I wanted the look, but also the practicality. We drink wine, cook quite a bit of spicy food and use alot of grapefruit (which can damage other surfaces). It doesn't scratch, looks fabulous and I have no idea whether it would withstand a hot dish as it would not occur to me to put something straight down on a worktop. We have had it a year, no problems at all. All it needs is a polish with a microfibre glass cloth every day to keep it smear free.
