Open plan kitchen/sitting/dining room

We have just built a new extension to create our new kitchen. We have a great space to work with but are struggling with our colour choices for the walls and whether to wallpaper or not as a feature. To complicate matters we have a lovely curved wall which we wanted to paper but have been told may prove difficult. Our kitchen units are a high gloss dove grey with a darker mat finish for the island and wall units. The walls we were considering papering are the ones shown in the second and third pictures which will be the seating and dining areas.

I love your ideas! A professional paper hanger will be able to handle that slight curve with no problem. The only way it might be an issue is if the paper is super thick and stiff like Anaglypta, but even that might be handled with a pro working on it. Best of luck achieving your wish list.

Thanks Cynthia, I will persevere with my idea to get that curved wall papered! Would you have any suggestions regarding a possible colour scheme, should we stick with shades of grey and if so where do we inject something a little brighter?

I agree with many of the suggestions above, especially that there's too much furniture in the living room. You're going to hate me for saying this but I think there's too much clutter and busyness overall for such a small space. I'd radically reduce the number of pictures and knick-knacks in both rooms – especially the living room – and move the ones you keep to less prominent places. I'd also take the coat rack and cookery bookshelves out completely, and replace the busy parquet flooring with either not-busy plank laminate or a simple-patterned or solid rug. Finally, I like trees but that spidery palm tree is hideous IMO.

Hi Susannah, I would advise you to get samples pots of all your choices and paint the relevant walls (large areas and in corners to check colours in shadow too). Make sure you judge the effect of each colour on the other in the room. Best wishes, JNSQ

I would have snapped it up too. I'm actually put of by 'staged' houses, I'd rather buy somewhere that needs bringing back to life. It looks fabulous now, but probably looked fabulous in it's heyday. We looked at a house that was very retro and sixties and although the estate agents were sniggering at the decor, it was obvious that the couple who initially had it were arty and stylish in their day.

I think grey is so overdone since it became fashionable after the death of chocolate brown six or seven years ago. The trend is changing so that while grey still exists (such as in your cabinetry), it's not the focus. The 2016 Colour of the Year is white! Each paint company has selected a few that they are featuring so it's not one particular Pantone this year. The idea is to have your white walls and then pop them with beautiful clear colour, and the grey is a perfect foil for the colours. We're not back in the Nature colours of beige/gold/sage/browns. It's more orange, red, bright mustard yellow, clear greens, turquoise, navy and so on. You need to find a source of inspiration, which could be your wallpaper. There are some gorgeous ones available and these would be your best starting point. When you choose your upholstery, be brave and go for a colour! Hope this helps :)

That's great advice, I think I will go for a soft white on the main walls and find a wallpaper that pulls all the tones together with a strong accent colour. I particularly like your suggestion of turquoise! I think a pop to the shops is in order! Thank you.
