Window Dressing Dilemma ! Can you advise please.

We have been in house for a few years, and haven't really focused on downstairs Windows...because of my fear of 'getting it wrong' and making expensive mistakes!...
The house sits on its own with garden all around ... Dining room is open plan, and leads off of kitchen. It's a long room - has couple of sofas one end where the windows / French doors are. Window frames are PVC - so would that in itself rule out certain options? eg: wooden shutters? Ceiling is NOT high, and the room can be quite dark at times. The room / Windows do need 'warming up' to help make it
feel cosier, with some added privacy, but at the same time, I don't want it to look heavy and closed in here's a couple of pictures- quickly taken, so apologies for quality (and rubble) Look forward to your ideas...
