Painting exterior wall tiles?

Hi, we have bought a 1960s house with external brown wall tiles which I'm not keen on. Ideally I want to remove and render the whole house, but don't think we have the budget! I'm thinking of getting the tiles painted a dark slate grey, just wondered if that was possible as never seen this done before? I think I'll then get the rest painted cream. Any other ideas welcome!!

Hi, are the tiles actual tiles? They're usually made from a 'roofing felt' style material, also, it's most likely that underneath those, it's just a wooden batten frame, not brick. Therefore, removing them wouldn't be an option. Therefore, with regards to those, we'd need to know what they're made from. Painting exterior tiles is not the best idea, you will be very limited in colours usually comes Red or Black, it doesn't last and will peel eventually. Painting Bricks doesn't give a great look, but rendering is cheaper than you think, especially if you paint the render yourself. It's really easy to do, just very time consuming! Just bear in mind, that depending on what's behind the tiles, it will be difficult to render that area. Personally I don't mind the tile area at all or the colour of the brickwork.

You could always consider changing the colour of the windows, if they're Upvc you can now get them powder coated in any of the 1000's of RAL colours. ( it's actually a ot cheaper than you think. Change the front door and garages to make more of an impact!

I'm fairly sure you could use a masonry paint.

I would just replace the tiled bit with whatever you prefer. Personally I would render that bit but wood or UPVC would work

Painting them could be a temporary solution to update your kitchen. Talk to your local paint store to get the appropriate primer and paint products.

Hello Matt, I think the brick colour is rather nice and don't feel if you chose another colour such as the green you mentioned that this would not enhance either.. You could change tack completely and decide on brick or earthy tones for the scheme... With some additions of lighter tones in earthy shades.. So you layer the scheme pretty much in the same way.. If you choose to paint the bricks a light colour.. With the use of the fire they may become sooty and dirty.. I'd either leave as is or paint a darker colour... Matt finish too... Perhaps a bit more mulling over.. either way enjoy what you decide.. : ))

The first mock up looks the best to me. The issue is that digital renderings don't show how the light affects the colour so just bear that in mind. I think the black looks traditional and so a warm grey would be more sympathetic if you want to modernise it slightly. Colours look much lighter on exteriors so it can be a good idea to test things that are slightly darker than you might consider initially.

Those painted floors look really good, don't they. She did an update on one of the floors she painted a couple of years ago and it still looked really good. Think it's at least worth a try. It's not a huge space, and if you're planning to change the floors one day anyway, it doesn't matter that much if it starts peeling after a while. Love the wallpaper :-) Deserves a floor that looks good with it.

thb those tiles are your best option. to render that area and paint would look terrible.

I think render can look much cleaner and more modern than the original tiles and doesn't fight with the architecture

Thanks all - going to be a while till we have any budget to do the front as have a lot to do inside first. Have already removed the side gate and bit above and replaced with curved-top wooden gate and already looks much better. Think with a new oak front door and garage that will probably make enough of a difference for now!

Hi Gemma - answer is nothing so far! Used up all our budget and still need to do upstairs bathroom and on maternity leave next month so will probably stay like this for a while! If weather gets better hubby says he's going to paint it as that will be cheapest option and if it still doesn't look great can replace with something else when I'm back at work and saved some pennies!! Let me know how you get on though!

Hi,

Just wondering if you got round to painting the tiles. I am looking at doing the same with my house as it’s so outdated and need to modernise it a little. I was also thinking of going grey so would love to see what it looks like.

Hi Holly, nope still on the to do list, and keep changing our mind! A friends house had blackened wood instead which I really liked, but no idea on costing so will wait till we've saved up - still need to do lounge first though!!

Hi, I am have been searching to solve the same issue and I found this image of a 1930’s semi, tiles been painted dark grey...door matched, looks great in opinion! Will be doing this myself!

Hi Kieran, that's great, thank you so much, just what I was thinking! And we have a new slate grey door so that will look so much better - should be a much more budget friendly option so may actually get round to it this year now!

They do tiles that look (and I believe made) from brick so could find some which match existing.

If you want like Hardie weathers boards this wouldn't cost much for such a small area. Especially if install yourself. Easier than you think for a simple area like this, there are YouTube videos. I want to do my detach but is 4 sides, 2 levels, corners, windows etc, so won't be doing myself and been quoted £17K! But I have about 20x more area to cover so my guess it this would cost you £1K.

Dulux weather shield, satin for wood and metal, Nobel grey, £20 available hardwear stores, its a paint they mix, my entire street just about used this, looks fab
