art nouveau tiles discovery

Bought lovely bluebellgray 'mode' bedding (see photo but ignore paint cards above) then uncovered original art nouveau tiles on fireplace. What colour walls and curtains can tie the two together? Large light room so happy for strong (but not too dark) colour on walls but curtains will be made to measure due to very large window so must be quite neutral so will last. I wanted bluey green before I saw the tiles but now wondering about some sort of purple/grey theme. Tell me there is an answer out there!

Oh I am completely green with envy! To buy a beautiful house and score all that gorgeous furniture - how fabulous! I haven't read all the posts but agree that to paint most of these pieces would be a crying shame. I also agree with having a few antique dealers look at your furniture and assess it's value; then sell the pieces you're not so fond of & enjoy those pieces you love.. At the risk of causing upset to anyone, the only pieces I'd consider painting would be those that are damaged beyond restoration but could still be usable &/or functional.... My head is still spinning at all that fab furniture - IF you could find it in Australia you'd be paying $$$$$$!

Dear @judibutler I assume you are referring to a wall which is wholly above ground and that you have completely ruled out damp tracking into the wall from above. A lot depends on the size and thickness of the wall and other factors, such as if the building is listed. Damp penetration (driving rain) through granite walls has been an ongoing problem in church towers in the southwest of England for some time. Ironically the problem often seems to get worse after re-pointing in lime. Granite is fairly impervious and was often in laid in large blocks meaning trapped water has little chance of getting out through thin mortar joints. Historic England held an excellent conference on the subject in 2013; the transcript of proceedings can be found at: http://content.historicengland.org.uk/content/docs/research/damp-towers-conf2013-programme-transcripts.pdf A roughcast lime render coat may help, but there could equally be voids in the wall which are holding damp and may need grouting. However, grouting is a very tricky and expensive technique which should not be undertaken lightly, and only works if one knows exactly where the voids are. Over-cladding the whole wall with semi-sacrificial weather boarding may be a last resort. This and rendering are likely to require planning consent. Depending on where you are located, a company like ArchiMetric (www.archimetrics.co.uk) could insert some interstitial moisture monitors into the wall to try and find out exactly where and when the damp is getting in and how it is moving through the wall, but this may be expensive. Some localised investigation by dismantling pockets of stone may be useful. The Society of Ancient Buildings helpline (mornings only on 020 7456 0916) may be able to help with specialists in your area. Most importantly try to get an understanding of how water is getting into and moving through your wall before you embark on anything. If your problems relate to below-ground damp then a different response will be needed.

Hi miss. To put just right and the best solution for your entrance is very important and we can say dificould to. There is many important facts you should think about ( architecture situacion, your taste and wishes, investition, how strong is the day light etc.) You have two posibilities, chouse and make artistic stained glass before paonting the interior to chouse color of wall on stained glass or second which is more dificould and left to designer of glass less space is to make the project for already colored ambient. If its important for you is great to think input the glasses in triplex glass sistem (stained glass is in the midle of two glasses) to protect them, easy cleaning and get a good U thermo index. You can use one of two diferent technics of stained glass (leaded or "Tiffany"). Leaded glass is very old technic of producing windo glasses and traditionaly used for victorial style. The star of Art Noveu is Tiffay technic. But for the doors and ambient we more prefer artistic glasses in "Tiffany" becouse it is much more strong and delicat look from near position. Special in arabic countries is very popular rich victorian mansions with new "tiffany" stained glasses inside. Any way its my opinion and recomendation to use interior designer or master artist for design of stained glass art to make your project just perfect and you will lather nor regret where you invested the money. We have done a kitchen in Finchley for a lady with eccentric taste, I don't even know what to mention? Is it the fact that one wall is bare brick tiles effect and the other normal tiles? Is it the pendants over the antique blue dining table that she has imported from Argentina and placed in a modern kitchen? The fact that 1 side of the kitchen is white and 1 is grey, and 1 has quartz worktop while the other stainless steel? The quirky silver star on the wall? Or the artistic blind on the kitchen window?
