I'd love to see an article that describes the best practices for pruning fruit trees. It would provide an assortment of fruit trees and describe when is the best time to prune them, how to prune them and when to fertilize them. :-)

Absolutely echo comments above regarding raising the soil level around the tree, a big no no as it will mean at best the tree will struggle and fail to thrive and will probably eventually die. Decking is a good solution if you want to install a seating area around the tree, with planting around it to soften the edges. I would maybe look at a composite decking as it will mean less maintenance and will not become as slippery as timber in a shaded area, also if going for a contemporary look it can look very sleek, especially if choosing a grey or even black. You could also add in some lower growing shrubs, herbaceous, spring bulbs etc and create a edge of woodland feel to this area, which would have interest and create a lovely view, whatever the time of year. Starting growing my own veg when we landscaped our garden and added raised beds a few years ago. Also have a tiny lean-to greenhouse which is good for starting things off but it's a bit too easy to forget about things I've put in there! We have a crab apple tree which I've used to make crab apple chutney and jelly. I've grown potatoes, peas, courgettes, carrots, onions, raspberries, strawberries, spinach & salad leaves fairly successfully. Tomatoes & squash didn't go so well! I most enjoy growing things I can pick direct from the garden and eat/cook straight away. The peas and salad also look quite nice in the garden. Our raised beds were filled with soil that was dug up from elsewhere in the garden (including lots of stones which seem impossible to remove and I'm now just considering as drainage...) & I dig in compost each year. I rotate the crops I can but I'm not sure if it really makes any difference. Slugs and snails are a problem! They don't seem to like red lettuce though so I have plenty of that!

I like the idea of adding more fruit trees. A sort of mini orchard can definitely be achievable. Looking at the trees you have now they seem to be creating a natural archway. I would accentuate this by adding a willow arch and training the cherry into it. Speaking of training fruit trees have a look at espalier or fan trained trees which can work really well in smaller spaces. Not sure how keen a gardener you are as this technique requires a lot of pruning and attention. I also would lose the straight path. Instead all I would do is have a semi circle of paving at the top of the steps and grassed paths for the rest of the garden in organic flowing shapes so it looks natural. A border at front near the patio with a mix of small evergreens and summer perennials would give interest all year round. Had some free time this morning so I did a little sketch/plan how I think it could look. Will add some inspiration pics in next comment.

You can also check with your local extension center as they have information on fruit trees specific to your area.

The other option is to find a good arbourist and get them to prune the trees. You could always get them to teach you over a few years until you are ready to fly solo. I've seen some pretty brutal pruning jobs by amateurs over the years. We have a 35 yr old orchard and have a pro in every year to take care of our trees.
