Love the door

Really lovely contrast of colour, design and materials in this kitchen, but the door is puzzling me - any idea of how this is constructed to achieve that style?

Hi there,

The door has a square solid oak frame with wide 125mm styles and rails with a steep internal bevel around the centre panel.

You could always go for a worktop with a little more interest like Kashmir white granite which has burgundy splodges and bits of grey and green. Or add colour with tiles or wall colour. I have french grey (green/grey) cabinets and white mirror Quartz work tops and love it.

thank you ALL mulling over all these comments. Just had a specialist kitchen fitter in for advice his thoughts were and im quoting "at the moment you have a very grand type look with the beautiful corian worktop yes french windows will let light in but chopping the base units will give you little to no work space around the cooker and will make the kitchen look smaller as no continual line and to replace this kitchen now again in solid wood would be approx 10 to 15k" so we discussed replacing the lower doors in solid timber again in a colour called daktar lightish greeny grey but leaving some original oak colour in my cooker plinths and inside bookcase end unit and my winerack and replacing the top glazed units in same greeney grey colour to tie top with lower units lights in new plinths in lighter wood and also replacing the ugly dark window sills in the same timber. Replace the table and chairs with a more contemporary acrylic table and ghost type chairs to create illusion of space but still serviceable for my needs and pets. Oh dear what do you think???? im not a good diy painter to get a professional in to paint I think would be approx 1500 anyway so feel first plan I would get more of a finish and expensive lux look. Hoping achieve classic but on trend look. See image I love but reverse it original oak at top units and greeney grey on the base units what do you all think will it work before I part with my cash again hate to be disappointed again8

Hi. If budget is tight rendering is not an option, why not just paint the wall and railings, be bold with your colour choice, that will make a massive difference and as Eliza says take the wall from the 70's to contemporary. Please don't put stones/ gravel or similar onto any existing solid surface, they wont stay put and they will act like roller bearings. There isn't a cheap and certainly not a free solution. I think Eliza's other comment about remove the slabs and cover with shingle is the best solution. Ideally remove slabs level with sharp sand, cover with geotextile membrane and then add shingle. Sharp sand and pea shingle for drainage from a builders merchant are the cheapest solution at about £45/tonne bag. Fancy landscape stone is virtually the same but massively more expensive. you are limited on colour. Break up the expanse of gravel with olives, bays, lavender and rosemary in pots and you have an instant Italian feel, look and aroma. 1 tonne bags of shingle @ 50mm will cover around 15 sq m. For any sort of paving laid on a proper base you are looking at £100 sq m.

You need a carpenter to add a slither of wood to the bottom of the door to help close the gap. You may never be able to fully close the gap as it may be needed to clear uneven floors. You could get the carpenter to add a floating floor that is packed to level out the slope. You could add a threshold although I worry that would be a trip hazard. Or you could choose a draft excluder
