Small bathroom ideas for incorporating airing cupboard

We currently have a tiny bathroom with a toilet, sink and bath with overhead shower that needs updating.

We are thinking of changing our heating system which would free up the cupboard next to bathroom as the hot water tank would go.

Does anybody think we could use this space to perhaps have a shower cubicle? We have a baby so would need to keep a bath as well

the measurements are

the current bathroom is 1700mm deep from window to door & 1820mm wide

the airing cupboard is approx 840mm deep and 640mm wide

Hi Claire,

I was intrigued with your question so I thought I'd provide you with some of my thoughts along with a quick sketch showing potential design layouts for your bathroom. It's quite tricky because the cupboard for the boiler isn't that large. I wouldn't encourage trying to fit a shower into that space because 1) 640mm wide would be too tight and it would be difficult to enjoy a shower without knocking your elbows against the walls. 2) You could widen this area by moving the stud wall down to provide you with maybe a 800mmx840mm shower but this wouldn't leave you much space for the bath, basin and WC. My opinion would be to utilise this additional space and move the bathroom door there to create a larger floor space. Option A (image on left) has the door located where the boiler is/was and the walls are kept as is currently. Option B shows the door facing towards the basin area which is a much more pleasant way to enter the room as oppose to Option A but requires adjusting the current walls slightly.

Hi Claire we had same problem with a small bathroom which had storage heater but no bath. Your bathroom looks very similar to layout of mine. We removed storage heater and used all space we could. Pictures attached. If you wanted separate shower have you thought of having bath underneath window and using the space where your bath would go to have a separate shower there instead!

I wouldn't change much regarding the layout/placement of white goods either. But it'd be possible to get some extra. For example, an L- or P-shaped shower bath would get a nicer shower space. You'd end up with the wider part by the window though so may then also consider opaque glazing or a screen there. A concealed cistern in the back wall would bring that forward by around 10cm. If you don't want to loose all that space, a boxed-in cistern and shelves above may give you a little storage back. On the washing machine: you triggered my inner geek :-) This may be possible. You need to research a few things for this: A) a slim depth washing machine (usually 425mm) B) availability of a height reduction kit for it (if these are avail gets height down from 850mm to 800mm) C) use an extra-flat bottle trap for the basin D) partly embed that into a thin washtable (to make the surface then a total of ~100mm above the machine) If all these go together it should just be possible to fit washtable, drains, basin trap and the machine underneath into a box about 910x600x500mm (HxWxD) which is kitchen unit height. The countertop sink would sit above that. Maybe a little bit of extra space could be gained still if you'd construct a basin from a flat shower tray with an integrated trap (a Wedi fundo plano is 60mm high) but I'm not sure how to put the washing machine drain on then. Now that we have a few measurements, I think it is potentially possible, although I disagree with moving the window. The shower needs to stay within the 'cupboard area' at around 800-900 square, otherwise there's not enough room for everything else. The thing that dictates is actually the measurement on the landing. Therefore, you would need a proper 'exact measurement' plan drawn up by a concept planner. Here's the idea in theory:-

I would go for the full length cupboard above, think it looks really sleek. You may want to reconsider how you store all the items that you have on display, maybe a countertop unit or other storage so that you maximise wall space. Perhaps a carpenter could create additional storage similar to that hiding the boiler? Also store items below the boiler inside the cupboard? I personally don’t use every single item daily and prefer a sleek look. My old bathrooms below!
