Need a complete house redesign and renovation

I love all things contemporary and would like to redesign a 6 bed bungalow as well as landscaping the rear gardens...if you have ideas that can kick this off please do share

You need a work hub - a wall is idea to stick your plans and add your inspirations, you hopes and dreams up on - a time line - a start and finish goal and a good team to help you see it all through !
You can either do this the DIY route or bring in relevant professionals to help along the way.

Plan ahead and stick to your decisions and you should find it easier to stick to your budgets .

Yes, start by identifying what is currently not working for you or if a new acquisition then decide on a theme. If you have no idea, hire someone who can come up with a myriad of ideas from which to help you narrow down what you intend for the home...

Is the building a particular period? Does this inspire the interior in some way?.. Do you have something particular that you want to weave into the scheme... What is your budget... Do you need nifty ideas on how to save here and there... Do you need planning for what you intend? All these things may be able to give you an idea of how to start the process and If I can help you further let me know.. .... I'm also good with gardens... : ))

Hi Iona and thank you!!! I'm sure your house is going to look exactly how you'd like it and you'll enjoy it even more knowing how much thought you put into every little thing you've chosen. The jellyfish are mushrooms :)) My hubby and his brother love Susan Derges' photography (me too now!) - the mushrooms were bought at an auction. If you look again at the pics of our hallway, the blue print there is one of her camera-less photos; also the girl with the drops of water that's in front of the plant in the living room; as I said, we are all big fans of her work here :)) My brother-in-law spends most of his days on auction houses websites or browsing exhibitions... usually artnet is a good place to enquire about her photos http://www.artnet.com/artists/susan-derges/2 To be honest, until I met my guy and got sucked into 'the world of originals' (ha!) i agree with oneplan completely. this hasn't been designed and its been done on inferior design software with no care to propping or dressing the room to make it look like a room you want to live in. its all very well putting in blocks of units in solid colours, but a kitchen designer doesn't put units on walls and leave it there, the room is decorated, floored, propped, lit up etc etc and then you would not feel so hesitant about it all. there's nothing wrong with the layout per say, its fairly standard, I just think you have not been able to visualise yourself in the room. go back to your designer and ask him (or her) to put some colour in the room, to play with a feature wall, to prop it a bit, to play about with different flooring so that you can get a feel about the room and what you would like.

I'm assuming your proposals are in reverse and you aren't moving the staircase to the opposite side of the house!?!? On the assumption that you enter the house via the smaller garden, and have a porch, you could widen the existing 'dining room' to incorporate the stairs, making that a fairly generous sitting room. Load bearing walls must obviously be taken into consideration. There's no reason why you shouldn't enclose the stairs with T&G and a door at the bottom of the stairs. I've done this here and even my neighbours can't believe how much space I've gained. One has copied this in totality while another has just ripped out the under stairs cupboards. In my under stair space, and apart from my general sofas, I have created a 'snug' with armchair, generous footstool and a bookcase - my little reading area. The rear could then become your kitchen (using the original kitchen as a utility on one end and a walk in larder for all your dry goods etc. opposite), with dining and seating areas. I am vehemently anti Islands. To me they're a totally unnecessary appendage which, somehow, the designers have persuaded us we need. Resist, resist, resist. You have a table to eat round, sofas for coffee with pals, why an island? I'm further baffled by why, with seating in the kitchen/dining area folk would want adjoining doors from that to a comfy cosy private sitting room. These were previously known as 'Drawing Rooms' because you 'withdrew' to them after dinner. I have always had one such room. It's so, so lovely to have a snug room which is 'detached' from the bustle of everything going on elsewhere. And, if you have, or plan to have children it would be a marvellous child free zone - no toys etc., just your own grown up space. The very best advice anyone can give you is to 'live' in the house before you make massive changes. Mull things over, move seating and just wait until you are 100% certain. This is a huge undertaking which, once done, would be so costly to change. My relatively new neighbours have finished their extensive renovations and said to me that they wished they hadn't rushed so much. Good luck and do keep us all up to date with everything, please.

Thank you both @rinked @minnie101 for your comments and feedback. I think flipping the kitchen to the other side of the rear extension looks like it could work, but I think we'll lose some essential kitchen storage space. I like the way you've increased the depth of the utility space, it makes the area look a lot more fuller. If we were to go back to the drawing board and start completely from scratch, how differently would you lay out the spaces??
