Floor tiles and skirting

About to have floor tiles laid in a large open plan area (kitchen, dining and living) and, the builders have fixed the skirting on some of the walls and, it was supposed to have gone on after. There is quite alot of the skirting fixed and, the walls and skirting painted. What do I do? Get the skirting removed and, damage the painted walls or put all the skirting on and tile up to it which is not a very nice finish.

Also the entrance hall will have a 2m deep coir mat which fits eacvh side wall to wall and, the floor beyond the matting is going to be tiled. The builders have put skirting on the walls because there will be coir matting but, this means they will have to tile up to skirting again which is not nice. Struggling to get my head around how to finish off properly. Any advice please?

You can get beading to cover any gaps where the tile meets the skirting (we did this when fitting wood floors) however it was not what I wanted and if I'm honest still bugs me 6 years later but we couldn't get the skirting off with out wrecking the walls. I'm and almost finished extending and renovating my kitchen and we've tiled then put skirting on. It looks so much better.
I suppose it depends who is at fault for fitting the skirting before putting the floors down, if it's your builder then I'd be tempted to insist they remove the skirting and make good.

Wreck the walls if necessary then get it done in the right order.
A good decorator can repair the walls but bad tiling can never be disguised.

hmmm usually with every line of tiles there are all sorts of decorations special pieces and also matching skirting tiles..... have a look at them and see if you could use them! ciao

Can someone advice please, I have a glossy taupe/cement 800 x800 kitchen tile, the doors & architrave are White oak, walls are white (for the moment) kitchen/sitting room is taupe and drift wood bank. Do I put the tile as the skirting? or do I do white skirting? or white oak. I walk into the kitchen through double doors from the hall where (I maybe) putting white skirting as the tiles are carrera marble but there is a white oak stairs... I have the same dilemma upstairs as I am using different woods in the rooms, robust oak landing, but white oak and walnut in other rooms. Please advice

Hi Ree :) I would take off all the existing skirtings (yes everyone does it differently?!) It will be more work/money as you will undoubtedly cause damage to the plaster when removing them, which will need to be made good then redecorated. You will then be able to see where any cabling and pipes are. Almost certainly some of the skirting will be damaged during removal but this is easily replaced with 'off the shelf' product or you could take a piece to your local timber yard and they can make you some to match. I've done it this way in all rooms in my house and this is how we do it for our clients. All the best Jason :)

Thank you both! Would you advise to do just the one colour/medium throughout the house? My husband seemed to think white or oak would look good everywhere except where the tiled floors are. I don't think it would be a good idea to do 2 different skirting boards though, do you?

I agree ...but, the thought of all the backtracking to now take off the skirting from an area of 100 sq metres is making me loose the will to live! What other flooring apart from carpet, can be laid up to skirting?
