What's the most British thing about your home?
Comments (67)To add to my earlier comment, I think my individualism epitomises the very essence of being a true Brit. I'm not a slave to trends, just go with my heart and hope my design ideas will come together in some sort of coherent way. There's pride in that in spades, and we're a proud nation, aren't we?!...See MoreYour home vs. your childhood home?
Comments (21)We lived in a 3 bed semi until I was 11. Half of it faced due north, so there was a room we never ever used. Then we moved to a 4 bed, which we needed, as there were 6 kids. I absolutely loved the second house. It didn't face any direction fully, so it got sun in most rooms at some stage. It was on a turning circle in a cul de sac, so it looked really small from the front, but had an irregularly shaped extension at the side that was completely soundproof.( My brothers could play their music really loudly and noone ever complained). This opened out into a huge garden, which my mother made absolutely beautiful. My parents built two patios in it together and my mother built her own flower bed, using dry stone walling techniques. My parents had lots of midcentury furniture, some of which was made by my father from a book on Swedish design. You could buy the orange sofa he made now! There was a little gazebo in the garden which turned out to be a monk's cell, the last part of the abbey that had been there. A tree in our garden was pruned by a man who happened to have come there as an apprentice tree surgeon, and he was able to tell us that it had had a bench all the way around the inside. It fell down during Hurricane Charlie, as the front wall was leaning, but my father rebuilt it over the course of 9 years. My mother's style is way ahead of her time; their bedroom has been duckegg blue and brown for about 20 years!...See MoreWhich items do you research the most for your home?
Comments (2)@ Isidora Markovic : Good point - I think it always starts with the kitchen. Once this is done, most other items fall into place....See Morewhat is the most important aspect when picking kitchen splash back?
Comments (7)For me the most important thing was how it would "go" with the rest of the kitchen. Also, as I planned the kitchen, I needed to understand how and how well, the splash back would intersect with the extractor, the wall units and the worktop upstand. FWIW I would never have had a printed glass splash back, although we did consider a plain white one. But the style of the extractor meant the splash back needed to be shaped around the extractor unit - not so easy with pre-made glass splash back. My biggest turn off with websites is bad grammar and spelling mistakes. I feel that if a company cannot be bothered to check something as important (and often the first interaction the company has with potential customers) then I would question how careless they would be with my order. I also hate pop ups and distraction on a page. For instance - and I hope you don't mind me commenting on your website - having the phrase "package deals available!" at the top of most product pages is a distraction for someone just looking for a splash back. It looks like it's a trade only thing and it looks a bit down market and a bit Trotters Independent Traders'ish. Perhaps combo offers may be better mentioned on a separate page of "offers" or a small section in the product information that combination/bundle deals of a splash back and worktop are available....See MoreOcean Clarke
