What ladder should I use to paint my ceiling?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to paint my landing soon, and the ceiling is really high. I've been looking at getting an industrial ladder from http://www.titanladders.co.uk/ but I'm not sure which one would be the most reliable and safe to use?

Any suggestions would be fantastic.

how high, approximately is the ceiling? have you heard of extendable rollers? I've got one from a local hardware. picture a pole with a pole inside it. The inner pole can be pulled out to the required length and secured in place. You can attach a paint roller to the end, to paint a ceiling. may work in your case, and you'd only need to climb a bit on a standard ladder

An extending roller handle is fine if the walls and ceiling are the same colour and not too high, if the handle is extended a long way in a confined space it is difficult to manage and get up and down between paint and ceiling.

I think your instinct is spot on - the grey does not go with your lovely house at all! You said yourself, 'the grey craze', why follow the herd? Perhaps you should question why you want a 'contemporary colour' instead of one of the many choices which will enhance your beautiful period house. You don't see lovely pink Suffolk cottages, or the black and white half timbered houses characteristic of some areas daubed with grey because it's the latest fad.

You can colour stain the roof as well (assuming it is wood or cedar shingle). I have done this in a previous house but because it is the roof it won't last as long as the outside walls. Therefore I recommend that if you use a garden shade (don't use standard paint because the end finish will look poor) on the roof you should choose a shade of brown- personally I would try to go a little lighter than the current colour. The roof colour in my opinion dictates what you can do on the walls. I painted my shed black which was a good contrast to some lime green planting and the inside which I painted ivory. But I also think Caroline's recommendation for pale green is nice.

There are many variables when it comes to lighting and downlights are no exception. If you’re referring to ceiling downlights then I’d speak to City Electrical Factors (CEF) they’re a national company so I’m sure they can help. A brand I’m familiar with are ‘illuma’ so you could search them online to find out what they would recommend too. For kitchen and bathroom lighting search Sensio or Loox but you’ll need to find a none trade supplier as these are typically sold by trade only distributors. Hi,

I am renovating an 1850s house with 9ft ceilings and have been through the same problem (I am 5ft 2). I ended up buying a garden tower, daft as it sounds, and it has been the best purchase ever. I feel completely safe and it has allowed me to do some really long laborious tasks such as repairing lath and plaster ceilings and restoring cornice in comfort. It has wheels on one end so you can move it around the room easily and you can cover a bigger area than a ladder without moving it along. It dismantles really easily and doesn't take up much space either. Don't know how I would have managed without it. x lottie
