Tiles and splashback to brighten kitchen!

Hi,
We are currently extending our house. This is our kitchen that will be used again and reconfigured in our new kitchen. Cream units with a light walnut solid worktop. The extension will need as much light as possible. It would be great to get some suggestions on floor tiles and splashback to help with this. I really love crisp white metro tiles for a splashback but not sure how they would go with the cream cupboards. I'm considering changing the handles to something more modern but not decided on that yet! All thoughts appreciated :)

The 'metro' tiles would work well with the cream. The example at the Topps Tiles site is very similar (http://www.toppstiles.co.uk/tprod966/metro-white-tile.html) and will probably help you decide. The 'metro' tiles glazing will 'amplify' any light that is available in your kitchen. The pattern of the metro tile also suits the 'line' design on your cupboards.

I would suggest a very plain light grey tile without any grain for the floor to add just a little touch of a contemporary modern flair to the whole composition. The light grey will help create a 'base' to the whole layout and also help 'sober' down the cupboard and tile colours.

I think the metro tiles would work but would go for cream rather than white. I agree with changing the door knobs for something more contemporary. Personally I would go a lighter floor. Perhaps a limestone effect with a grain in cream.

Glass would look good - give you a little reflectance without mirroring everything on the worktop. Also could be a subtle way to introduce some colour. If you use clear glass with screw back type fixings, then you can change the colour now and then by painting the wall behind if you're nervous about colour, or think you would want to change the look now and then. Another option is a stainless steel, which again would add in a little light reflecting but in a grey tone that would work well with what you have.

I agree with the builder, that work is shoddy and unprofessional and I would not be happy looking at that in my kitchen. It looks like a DIYer has completed it. In fact I call it a HUTH house! When I watch Homes Under the Hammer, often people buy a house and either do the work themselves or get their mates to refurbish and lots of them end up looking poorly finished for the low end rental market. Any chance that you could ask him to remedy the work though unlikely as you’ve already paid for it. Really sorry that this work was completed in this poor way.

Thank you! My thinking for the White tiles was more because I wanted to tone down the whole country look of my kitchen (I have a Belfast sink and cream range cooker too that will be staying) and I thought perhaps the white/grey grout would help with this? Also, any suggestions on alternative handles would be fab! This is the kind of kitchen I am currently drawn too but the hubby says wooden floor is a no go!! :)

Or this! But it's quite tricky working with the kitchen and cooker we already have. We will be introducing a breakfast bar however which may allow for bringing in a different colour unit.
