Here's a pic of similar colours to help envisage, drawing room blue may also work. I've never seen tiles used in that way TBH and Can only find this picture. I have seen other ideas with encaustic tiles in front of an island (one side) or hexagon tiles integrated with wood in a random pattern which can look great. Personally I might consider just using the oak and having a rug in front of the sink (assume that will be in the island?) otherwise the island may end up feeling a little disjointed. That's just my opinion though and happy to be proved wrong :)

Wow, thanks for the replies everyone... especially Minnie!!!!! I LOVE the first one you posted and that is exactly what I had in mind!! (The cabinet shelves at the very back of the picture!) I think they look incredibly stylish and I would imagine it will be much cheaper getting a carpenter making that instead of buying a complete (real wood) kitchen. Re the washing machine and dishwasher, yes I have these and don't mind them being on display. I also have marble worktops, hence wanting a solid base for them to go on. Is that first picture a deVol kitchen too? I wonder how much they could do one like that for?

Well as you can imagine, work stopped a few weeks ago. I've managed to get some supplies delivered so I'm doing the DIY bits. I'm currently boarding out the dining room ceiling to slightly lower it and to install downlights. The wiring and boarding should be done well before my builder us allowed back. Then I have to source the kitchen all over again!
