New kitchen extension

So, our kitchen is about 4m x 2.5m at the moment, we're hoping to extend to make it 7m x 4m. I've been trying to design the kitchen layout as would love the dining table in there too. What's the best layout for a family? Did think knocking the wall down in to the dining area. Ideas needed!!

Hello, this is a classic example of a 'side return extension' where you square off the building to the width of the full house. If you filter using this phrase you will see examples. You have choices here. You could put the dining room and kitchen together, and wall off the lounge to make it a separate room. If you want to extend the depth and go into the garden also fine but you are left with having to walk through the dining room to get to the kitchen. I would definitely extend the dining room into the kitchen. You will find that you will spend most of your time in this space. Do you intend to move out or live in whilst the work is ongoing?

So, we would do the side return and in to the garden to make it 7m but thought we could use the dining and living as one big living space but then I'd be interested in putting glass doors in to the main lounge so it's more for the adults. But it'd be the actual layout in the kitchen I need as there are so many options I'm overwhelmed!

Thanks for the comments , I live in South Yorkshire. We currently have a conservatory where the new extension is going , this has been converted to a playroom for my 5 year old which is full of toys, so although it says utility in the plans it is more of a toy room as the house is very small with no storage and I need somewhere to put all these .

Thanks for the reply, don't think I'm quit at that stage yet though. Was more looking for general ideas on where cooking/dining areas could be located and how to fit in the utility and loo. Hoping that others who have done similar projects could share ideas on how to get the best layout for the space.

You have a lovely, huge space to work with- that’s terrific. Are the position and size of the 2 windows fixed? I’d suggest getting the ideal, functional kitchen design first and then considering window placement next.. it may be that a single large window suits the final design better. I would change the fridge position to get it into either side of the main kitchen run. Ideally it should have counter space immediately adjacent to it. Imagine yourself grabbing and pouring milk for cereal.. and immediately putting it back.. can you do it with nary a step? For your oven setup, consider whether you might want one (or even both) directly under your hob. It can make a huge difference to efficiency for the cook, especially if their meals tend to involve active use of both oven and hob. Imagine making spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread… how easy is it to bake, grill, and stir the sauce without burning anything? Or having to squeeze past any kitchen visitors in your kitchen zone to check? ( And for draining the pasta, how far is it to the sink with boiling water?) I’d also pull the wine fridge out of the main kitchen run. It might be lovely to create a bar in the existing Aga area.

I would say long run of kitchen units on the left hand wall with an island more central to the room. A long stretch of glazing at the back to bring the garden into the space.,We had a large island that was made on casters that we could move for parties and events which was a great feature. (This would mean that you couldn't have any services to it) Dining table and cosy seating in the newly built area to the right under skylights.
