Lantern position in new kitchen extension dilemma

Our architecture has drawn up plans for our approved kitchen extension but I want to ask ideas for having a sky lantern.Should we have it to similar to our plans (nearer to the original building or more over to the proposed bifold doors? Also, what maximum size lantern would be recommended?Extension is width 5900 X 5900mm.Our architecture has said we will need the middle rsj but can move it up and down to accommodate the lantern and the lantern can be placed either side of the middle rsj.We would like a largest lantern as a statement piece but it won't sit over the dining table or island completely. Any suggestions???

Definitely put the shower room on the left. Because:- The shower room is a smaller intrusion into the traffic flow through to the kitchen than the living area is. The middle of the house only benefits from a modest window which should not be given to a shower room that only gets occasional use when a main reception would have to do without. The reception has more privacy from the front door when situated on the right. The shower room on the left can easier be used by upstairs bedrooms if it is closer to the base of the stairs and users wont have to go past two reception spaces to use the extra wc. Assuming you choose one type of flooring for the reception room and another for the hall and shower room- the shower room on the left offers more continuity of flooring. The left hand side is almost certainly under the main bathroom and soil pipe which offers some cost efficiencies.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do these detailed plans. You have certainly come up with some ideas that we had not thought about. In particular we wouldn't have thought about having a small sofa against that wall (we had thought the tv would be good here) but actually I think it feels nice to be facing the other way. I also like the piano and the bookcase being at the entrance and feels this would help separate the kitchen from the family room area and also be that I can hear my daughter play whilst I cook and pop round the corner to see her. We have only just created that large opening for the window as wanted as much sun in as possible (and in fact have just had it amended to make it larger so it didn't look so obviously like a garage conversion to us) - so I wouldn't be keen on the second idea of reducing the window size for the piano - but yes you are absolutely correct and we should have thought about furniture placement more than we did as the 15cm of wall to the left of the window has prevented me from running a nice long floor to ceiling bookcase along that wall which is disappointing - but still other areas to put it in. Luckily I can carry out your furniture arrangement as I placed 3 tv points so will see how it feels when we finally get finished. Thank you so much for these plans and the effort to achieve them!

Personally I think you need to bin the idea to put the kitchen there because it divides the space in such a way that there are four areas that have no apparent purpose and are not really big enough to do anything with. I suggest you blank out the kitchen cabinet position and the utility room on the plan and give the blank space to a kitchen professional to show where they would put the cabinets.

Hello, We are about to finalise our potential single-storey extension of a 1930s semi-detached build and would like some advise. Question 1 We are creating a family room with adjoining kitchen, that opens up onto a patio area and garden. The family room is 5.8m deep, and will be approx 5.7m wide. Decisions that we are contemplating: 1. would like to have a single large roof lantern in the middle, say3.5m x 3.5m (orange dotted line in floor plan). However to have this size, I will need more structural beams (ie extra expense) 2. architect has suggested 2x 2.5x1.2m roof lanterns that run parallel in the room (blue/green dotted lines in floor plan)- this means will only need 1 structural beam in the middle, and thus more cost effective. NB. In addition to the roof lantern(s) in the living room, we will have either a flat or roof lantern in the kitchen which will be 3x1m Whilst we can to keep the costs reasonable, if it only costs a little bit more but has more light (given the dining room area will not have direct light) would prefer the first option - welcome any thoughts. Question 2 For the doors leading to the patio, I would like to have 2 sets of double french doors with sidelights. Given it is a 5.7m wide space, there is not enough space for 2x a pair double french doors with 2 sidelights. Option 1: I was thinking of having 2 pair of double french doors with a single sidelight (1 has left side light, and 1 has a right side light) 3 panel french door attached, with a slim brick wall in between. so it would be: <-1m wall space-> <-1 set of double french doors with left sidelight-> <-1 set of double french doors with right sidelight-> <-1m wall space->. The french doors would be in line with the roof lantern option 2 above. (cant find an exact picture, however have double french doors next to each other in the picture attached) Alternatively i i leave 1m wall on each side, leaving about 3.7m of door space, I was thinking of: Option 2. a single set of double french doors with sidelights in the middle of the wall space, and possibly tall windows along until the end of each side? Option 3. sliding door with minimal profile? Would really appreciate any advise.
