Gloss laminate floor in a kitchen

I'm looking at perhaps getting a gloss laminate floor in my kitchen. Does anyone have experience of this? Are they really slippery if water is spilled? Are they easy to clean? Also....light or dark? (Photo in the comments)

Gloss laminates will be slippery when wet and even when dry if you tend to prefer socks over shoes. Gloss can give a very clean and luxury look to any floor but it will come with some drawbacks such as easy marking and maintenance. I don't mean damage per say but if you think of it the same way you would your windows with smudge marks and so on.

Also have you asked your supplier about the fact you are putting this floor in a kitchen? With the constant change in temperature and moisture in the air from daily cooking it usually isn't the best place for a laminate unless specifically made for such an area.

From your pictures i would go for dark as a contrast to your cupboards and it will be easier to keep than a light floor.

With all that being said, if you are prepared for the maintenance of gloss and the floor is of good enough quality for your area then go for it!

Dark gloss floors will always look amazing.

If you are working with white and grey already I think it would be good to introduce some colour warmth via the floor. An engineered timber floor would be warm underfoot but if you have underfloor heating them perhaps some natural clay tiles treated with boiled linseed oil. This looks beautiful and is warmer underfoot that normal glazed ceramic tiles but does require occasional maintenance, not unlike a timber floor.

Diana, have you considered herringbone pattern with wood effect tiles? They’re matt, but have a light texture and would make an interesting design statement and make the space feel a bit more cozy..And because they are ceramic tiles, they are easy to clean and would last forever. You can also install floor heating mats underneath.

Did you manage to find a picture of the worktop? I like the floor you've chosen however it's similar in tone to your existing and not as warm and may potentItaly bounce less light so if your criteria was for light and airy I wouldn't choose it personally

Thank you - that is very helpful. Another issue I have is that the tiles are cemented to the chipboard floor, so removing them will be a nightmare. I have been advised I can underlay over them or screed the floor. Or go for a looselay floor over them. What would you recommend? It is a large area and I don't want to go too expensive.

I would recommend lifting the ply and the tiles, then replacing with at least 18mm marine ply and countersunk screws. A screed of feather finish will hide all the screw heads and joints.
This will leave your new floor ready for any work you undertake, from laminate to even a simple sheet vinyl like rhinofloor.

This is the most expensive option for definite but when a subfloor has been done "on the cheap" or cutting corners I have found it to raise problems later on.

You can screed over the top of the tile if they have been prepared correctly (degreased and keyed), this can be a cheaper option as long as you get a floor layer that knows his stuff.
This will lead to your floor now being higher than before therefore if you add an 8mm laminate with a 3/4mm underfelt your doors might need planed and you will have a slight step from the adjoining rooms.

The LVT (luxury vinyl tile) is fine with underfloor heating because it is so thin although you will need to tell your supplier so the advise you on the correct adhesive.
It won't retain the coldness of ceramics and is very resilient.
