Please please please help with Kitchen planning

Hi everyone, I posted earlier but couldn't attach pictures. My new kitchen is very awkward shaped. It is neither a L or a room. It is an open plan divided by sliding door. Hence the designing is proving to be very difficult. I need an independent retailer who can design this in my budget. Budget is very very important to us. We hare happy to compromise on the furniture of kitchen but not on the appliances. Please could you pour some suggestions on how to plan this kitchen in exciting way. We have had boring kitchen quotes from the big companies - Howden, B & Q, Wren etc. We are looking for something new and exciting.

Hi Shikta. If you are able to, it would be good to have some rough measurements on your picture. Are you looking to use the space for a kitchen only or does the space need to accommodate a dining table as well. Whereabouts are you located, just roughly, so that people will know if they are able to support you.

Hi. I mean the wall with the utility door. I see where you are going with the symmetry for the wall with the aga, but I would make that tall end unit a pantry or place for serving plates, etc. and have the integrated fridge where you currently have the wood upper cabinet. I've been looking at your Ideabook and reading the aga discussion (I'm way behind minnie!) and I see what you are trying to achieve. But none of them have the same layout. When the feature aga corbel wall exists, it doesn't have an induction hob right next to it or it doesn't have a solid wall at the end (one of them is amazing with their deep cupboards either side but there is nowhere to put anything!). Do you have roof lights over the kitchen? Unless you have a giant lantern skylight and lots of under-cabinet lighting planned, please don't have black countertops. Apart from the fact that none of the kitchens in your Ideabook have dark counters, I come from a place of experience. I used to have a massive, terribly planned, kitchen with lovely black granite counters. Not only could only one person work in it even though it was the size of a dance floor, but the lights had to be on all the time and it was really depressing. And as there will be a dining table nearby to take in your beautiful garden, the island perches will be there to keep the cook(s) company, so facing in on the kitchen is perfect.

Thank you Jonathan for your thoughts. We have worked with an architect to plan the house. The kitchen at the moment is an the first floor but it means we feel we live in a flat with little access to the garden. It is always an intention to spend time outside, especially meal times...it just never happens when everything has to be carried down to the outdoor. Interesting to have other perceptions. I will look closely at you living room layout suggestion though, hadn't thought of the layout you suggested. This would be more L shaped as the plan suggests. We can move doors, tv points and the fireplace could perhaps be evened up on the wall.

Thanks Ellie - it’s to give the room a bit of character really! The house is a typical sixties design - self built by my dad and his friends in the sixties when they formed a housing association as they couldn’t afford a home here in Ambleside. Also it’ll be good to have the extra height for storage as I hope to take this higher at the far end.

I work remotely - so as long as you have an internet connection - that all that’s needed ! I love the idea of a 5m table ! I could have done with that kind of size for a client this week - but sadly we didn’t have room for one that long ! It’s lovely to be able to seat the whole family for a meal - just remember if you have that many guests regularly- means you need more soft furnishings too though - ie sofas enough to seat most or all of those people too !

This all depends on how big your budget is and some more specific details like your tastes and finish requirements - this differs for everyone and to get something truly new and exciting is to get something designed with 'you' in mind.

A galley kitchen layout is generally considered the most practical. I would opt for a long run across the back wall with an island, and to make it exciting I would introduce interesting materials. Unusual layouts don't make exciting kitchens, they may impractical ones. And don't get fobbed off with the boring materials the high street will offer you. A well chosen marble or basalt can make the space...
