Polypropylene or wool carpet?

My builder/carpenter/project manager's carpet guy is recommending 100% polypropylene carpets. My parents say wool. The stain resistance (and price!) of polypropylene appeals but we are going for a high end finish. What do you recommend?

Hello, Amy,

Wool is always a high-end finish, however I do understand the appeal of easy cleaning and a lower price! You don't say what type of pile you are going for -- flat-weave, velvet, twist?

And in which areas of the house? That can also make a difference.

There is always the option of a blend -- depending on the weave, carpets can be 50/50 wool/polypropylene, or 80/20 wool/polyester, which can help you get the best of both worlds.

I do like the patterned one on the stairs! But it is very expensive. I would choose by how long I planned to live there and what else I needed to spend money on in the house.

I hope that was a pure wool carpet! Although hard wearing, loop carpets trap dirt and hair like nobodies business and you can get pulls. I don't know about manufacturing defects however. A short, dense cut pile (like twist) will still be durable but less maintenance. Most are made of polypropylene but pure wool carpets are still widely available (all though I've heard horror stories from a colleague about moths eating their pricey wool carpet). My local carpet shop are part of the Greendale Carpets and Flooring buying group and they were very reasonably priced (£30-18 per sqm). I would recommend finding a local store from their website www.greendalecarpets.co.uk Admittedly I didn't buy my carpet from that particular brand (down to colour choice).

Wool loop pile or short pile remnant for rug

I like wool loop too! I’ve also recently done what Sonia suggests - I bought a large carpet remnant and had the edges whipped to make a large rug. I got mine online at Designer Carpets. You can search for remnants by size (the cheaper option), or you can choose fresh off the roll. As the name suggests, they sell reputable brands at a good price. https://designer-carpet.co.uk/

I have both, and prefer the poly to the wool. The polypropylene has a bit of a sheen to it and feels much more luxurious to me, the wool is a bit 'dead' after 6 years or so.

I preferred polyprop
because polypropylene is very soft, and looks very clean even after two years. If you have kids or animals then
polypropylene is a better option.
