Maybe some beech hedging on the fence line just to soften and define the line between patio and field also some protection from the wind. Also to stop your sight-line just flying off into the distance as well as unifying the trees. Should make things a bit cosier.

You need to present it as a stylish outdoor room. Paint the slatted fence/screen black. I know this might seem counter-intuitive in such a small dark space, but it gives and chic look to gardens and doesn't make the space seem smaller as you might think. Then get some planters and fix high on the back wall - you can get some really nice GRP, lightweight ones from Livingreen Design and plant with trailing ivy. This will draw the eye upwards and give the illusion of greater space as well as adding extra texture and interest to the walls. I would also be tempted to paint the back wall a pastel colour, maybe blue? This will give interest and definition to the space as well as making it look fresher. You can also use some floor level planters for shrubs that like shade. Try Aucuba japonica crotonifolia, Prunus lusitanicus, Ilex 'Golden King', Daphne odora aureomarginata, Sarcococca, Viburnum bodnantense. Also, Box topiary (balls, spirals, cones) will tolerate shade and will give a chic outdoor room feeling to the space. Buy or hire some outdoor furniture - a small dining table and some chairs and an outdoor sofa and low table. Use bright cushions and accessories and dress the space as you would the interior of your house. This will give people the idea that the garden is a useable, extra space, not a dank storage area. The garden should add value to the house if presented correctly.

We went with Fossil Sandstone, it has some beautiful colours in it, especially when kept clean and the sun shines. It's not too dark, so hopefully will keep the garden light and airy. Plus, as it kind of looks old it sits well with older properties. It's nice to see the fossilised plants etc embedded in it!

Looks great - did you do it yourself or did you have professional help laying the patio? We are just finishing our kitchen/diner and then we need to clear the builders rubble and relay the garden.
