What would deter you from buying a house?
Comments (35)We bought our house 15 years ago with an open mind but wanting some minimum basics - white bathroom suite and separate loo, kitchen / diner or scope to have one, 4 bedrooms, large - preferably bay - window for Christmas tree and a cat-flap. We got a Victorian fixer-upper - 5 bedrooms, a space for a kitchen diner (had to move some plumbing and gas into it and convert old kitchen into utility), lovely 11ft high ceilings, gorgeous tall bay window, cat-flap into the utility, wood-burning stove - on the road parking (oops) and it was in local guide books and sometimes a walk-around tour! I walked into the place with an open mind and immediately loved the atmosphere, it felt like home. High ceilings and off the road parking would be priorities next-time though, we love our high ceilings and everyone who visits us does too....See MoreAre you a big fan of glamping or camping?

Comments (14)I would completely concur with the plan to build a raised bed. You can use railway sleepers which are cheap and easy to construct into a bed. If you buy topsoil in bulk (which you will need to do) then it is much cheaper than you might expect compared with potting compost from a garden centre. Make sure you add in a good organic supplement too - something like spent mushroom compost or well rotted horse manure. I would definitely also dig out a depth of the poor soil that you have by the fence at the moment - the greater the depth of soil the better and most medium size shrubs will be happy in 450mm of good soil. Just make sure it does not dry out, especially when the plants are establishing in their first year or two. What you plant is entirely up to your taste and desires, but I would personally be cautious of bamboo. Even the clump forming varieties are generally pretty agressive and spread with strong roots that will take over a raised bed. I would suggest going for a mixture of evergreen shrubs to give you a base structure even in the winter and supplement with some perennials that will give colour and change through the summer. Climbers on the fence will help soften it too - Evergreen Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminiodes) is a great plant giving nice shiny leaves all year with heavily scented little star flowers in mid-summer....See MoreSwimming Pool Surround Design Ideas!! Comments (12)I worked in Australia building swimming pools, including some celeb clients. If you can, try to get hold of a copy of ‘poolside’ magazine from Australia. This is a consumer magazine and should give you lots of inspiration. Construction-wise we would normally pour a concrete ring beam around the pool deck that would anchor into the top of the pool sides with metal rebar dowels. Next the bullnose pavers would be overhung around the edge of the pool and then paved up to, before grouting. By the looks of it you’d be retrofitting this pool surround so could cause structural issues if the ground around the pool is not well compacted, and the ring beam moved, while being attached to the pool itself. With this in mind, you may want to look at something like compacted hardcore with a resin bonded gravel over the top. This will be non slip, can flex, if the ground moves, and by the time you’ve poured concrete and then paved it, would be cheaper and faster to install. Aesthetically, it may also be a good fit? Am not sure on compatibility for use around pools - perhaps seek reassurance from a U.K. provider first and then contract a reputable local provider. Decking is another option but slip resistance could be an issue on natural timber and the synthetic stuff fades and warps. Hope it goes well : )...See More

10 months agoHi Mary Lynn, the Belgard Montecito worked out well for us in hot dry Southern CA. Don't know about other wetter or colder areas. We chose not to seal it to preserve the Old World look. Are you planning on parking cars on it? We did not use it like that so I can't comment but would be wary of tire marks, which our concrete driveway did get. At that price we gingerly walked on it! We used a large heavy duty mat to protect from stains around the BBQ grill area. Perhaps you could mix the look using both Belgard and concrete. Here's a recent pic. Hope that helps!
