What colours can I use with my dark red leather sofa?

Just had my large living room re skimmed - so it's a blank space at the moment. However I want to keep my dark red leather sofas (2- seater and 3- seater). The room will have oak flooring and a black wood burner. My question is what colour scheme should I use for the walls, curtains, walls etc? I'm thinking duck egg Blue or maybe mustard, but my sensible head tells me I should just go for cream which is a bit boring. Any suggestions?

Hi there,

It’s great to be able to work with a blank canvas and good
fun too. I can see you love bold colours, but it can be hard to find the right
balance sometimes. I would suggest a soft, calm colour on your walls which will
enhance your furniture and create a real feature out of them. If you want to
avoid cream, try a warm neutral tone such as Dulux Rich Praline 5. This
gorgeous neutral will give your space a new look and complement your dark red
sofas, allowing you to bring an accent colour in through accessories.

Another tone that works beautifully with red accents is Dulux
Maraschino Mocha 5 which will add warmth to your room. Alternatively, Dulux
Dusted Moss 2 is a lovely calm green-grey tone, that will add a touch more
colour to your space for a fresh look.

I’d recommend you try tester pots of these colours so you can
see how they work with your natural lighting. I can see in your ideabook that
you love the wood cabin style – how about creating a feature wall with a wood
panelling effect on one wall of your room to add some interest through texture
and pattern? This would look great paired with soft neutral coloured walls.

The easiest and least expensive way to soften the sofas is to add cushions, it will immediately break up the solidness of the sofas, a rug will also help, but cushions would improve the look immediately. Try putting a couple of pillows on them, so that you can see how it changes the look.Hope that has been of help.

@Milfordmaid: thanks a lot for the suggestion. Lime green is sounding very nice to me. What did you mean by smaller bits of pillar box red? What do you think of the rug? I actually had a re-think and was thinking maybe I should leave out the rug. Just to use bright cushions, lampshades, and some decorative accessories combining the cushion colours and sofa colours and a bit of cream. What of the wall art?

It looks like a really nice large space...is it just the sofa that you have now? Are you looking to add more pieces in the future? Any photos of the space? Do you use colour in your newly renovated space? My first thought is if you like bolder colours than you can definitely still use those with a chocolate brown sofa. The first picture is a beautiful space using teal and chocolate brown. I also attached a few other colours from the Farrow & Ball range that would go nicely with your sofa (peignoir (the pinkish colour) and oval room blue (blueish colour) and brassica (greyish lavender colour). My second thought is about the room itself...do you already have a living area that is getting used? If so, maybe this room can serve a different function for you all together? Hiya, The color of the sofa is lovely, you just need to create the appropriate surrounding palette. You could use a rug in grey colors, cushions is grey patterns as well, along with some pale pinks/ pale blush pink or light blue, teal would work. Combine different materials as well, like leather (faux leather) in brown tones but remember to mix them up with some more neutral grey ones.
