We restored a set of windows on a grade II listed building. The dry rot fungus meant serious timber replacement but we managed to make good much of the originals. This is complete restoration, everything!

Your windows do look fine for now, so I agree with the other houzzers, leave them and replace them when they need doing. (Just from an eco-point of view, it's better to replace them when they need replacing, rather than before - though I guess you could sell the old ones for reuse?) I have a similar dilemma, where the original style windows in my home have been replaced with (fairly horrid) PVC numbers. However, they are still okay, don't leak or mist, so the plan is to leave them, save up and WHEN they need replacing, rip the lot out and splurge on the best bespoke timber replacements I can afford (which will be even better as I'll have a bigger pot saved up!).

Hi edwardaston, I would suggest restoring them again, and again, and again. Have they been draught proofed? Double glasing them is a one way street as the originals will be lost for ever. The traditional sashes are typically made from pitch pine (much better than the modern softwoods) so the materials are incomparable. DGU's (double glased units) also have a nasty habbit of misting up before their time, especially in a sash scenario. I'd put this down to the vulnerability of the DGU edge in a sash / putty. This makes for a disposable future ahead for these windows. Balance becomes an expensive factor involving lead make weights or out right replacement of the weights all together. Pulleys should be upgraded at the time as you'll near double the weight of the sashes. I also would not suggest modifying old sashes to take slim DGU's.. Avoid DGU all together and maybe get some nice roman blinds to keep you warmer.

This image below is an example window which was sent to us for restoration. The timber suffered extensive rot, with several breakages, flaked paint and cracking. In order to restore the sash; we had to identify all the timber that had rotted, replace and restore the wood, and sand and re-paint the sash with a micro-porous paint that would protect it in the future.
