Help - lighting for large rectangular table (single power outlet)
I am having a 310cm x 122cm (approx 10 ft x 4ft) oak dining table made and need a light fixture. There is only one single outlet in the middle and there is no chance of changing that! Options I'm considering are a single track that runs off a single outlet with multiple pendants hung at different heights. Or a swag from the centre to have 2 pendants. It is a large open plan room and is an oak framed extension with windows all around. I am thinking due to the size and shape of the table that a rectangular fixture is the only option. Everything in the room is chunky (beams, fireplace, dining table, tile ). Ceiling only 242cm (8ft) high. I have vintage style lights in the kitchen that you can see from this room, they are grey glass with a little brass accent (I didn't choose them - they were in already). There are some recess lights in the room. I like mixing modern with old and like the idea of contemporary lighting. I like the idea of combining some pendants - different styles, shapes, colours (neutrals) - maybe a couple concrete, a couple high gloss white and some metallic. I will also need two other ceiling lights (I'm guessing semi flush) - there are 3 lights in total in this room (one will be over the seating area and one in the middle). Thoughts appreciated! Any questions let me know! Also, trying to keep the cost down as much as possible as we have no furniture whatsoever or anything in fact as are just moving to the UK from abroad.

Comments (24)Whatever you decide to do with that side wall, I would suggest that you keep the idea of an "art gallery" in mind. The furnishings/accessories you currently have in the room are strongly suggestive of this theme. Even your kitchen is very "artsy". For the buffet/bar, I would suggest three ideas. The first picture is of a mid-century modern console. If you are into the eclectic idea, some wood would bring some warmth to the space while at the same time keeping with the modern vibe. The second picture stays very closely with what you already have in the room - black, sleek, modern but also brings in a bit of wood for warmth. The third picture goes in an even more eclectic direction with a very ornate console painted in a gloss black. All three ideas would work so it's really up to your personal taste. For the shelves above the bar/buffet, I would go with all glass as in the fourth picture. I would try to keep most of the barware in clear glass so that the items on the shelf will still have a "lightness" to them. Keep books, etc. in the drawers in the console. Liquor could be arranged on a mirrored tray on the console itself. Keep clutter to a minimum. I'd still like to see some art on that wall, too. Another idea would be the last photo, which is my least favorite, but, again, its a matter of preference. Replace the green portion of the wall with red and I would do the wooden cabinetry in black and the shelf in glass. One more idea, to bring the red into the lounge area, consider a red rug with a sculpted design to fit under the entire sofa area. As for the chair mix, I think four beige and two merlot would be lovely. I think you like a traditional look, so I'm a bit worried that you won't be happy with it. If the table will normally be smaller with four beige chairs around it and maybe put the two merlot ones on either side of the radiator cover/"console", then definitely do the mix. Mismatched chairs around a dining table are often all different or the same make and model in a multitude of colours or the same colour in different styles. Do a Houzz search and see if you can find your planned mix and if you like the look. If in doubt, get four beige and look at them for a while! You could tie the two chair colours together with little cushions on the chairs - maybe just on the two merlot ones. Comments (27)In my opinion the round chair takes a lot of space, but if you want to keep it you have to declutter the area even more. As said above, the photos on the feature wall are not necessary. If you remove them entirely I think it would look better. I also think that you don't need the side table there. You could either have the chair or the side table, but not both in that corner. The big coffee table takes a lot of space and closes the room. I would suggest removing both the big coffee table and the matching side table and having the little yellow/green round table as your coffee table. It goes lovely with the cushions and the sofa. You can put a slim modern floor standing lamp between the chair and the sofa if light is needed in this corner. You do have some great furniture pieces and features in these room. Comments (52)Thank you. Yes had to use my powers to persuade my partner :D I'm kidding it was quite easy actually. I was looking at that FC rug actually but the size put me off. Looking at your picture I must say I quite like layered rugs. Need to put some masking tape down to see where they could be placed..I'm struggling to imagine it. Or anything else in fact :) We've decided the sofa will stay at the wall for now. It just feels better. I'll order some white hydrangeas..thanks for the tip I'll look at M&S or Bloom does 3 for 2 too. We have an ornate rectangular golden mirror which I want to test above the fire surround before I look for a new one. Not sure about a coffee table. I was going to wait for the armchair to be delivered to help me see if a coffee table is needed..? Will check out the art and cushions. I guess I do need to order a rug(s) or console so we can go from there.....See More

Great. Yes I am getting a track with pendant adapters. I have found these that I like. I would get 7 and space them out but probably at different heights. Now the question is:
a) I get all grey and paint them in different pastel and white shades (I hand paint things for a living and these would look fantastic painted in chalk paint!) Like attached photo.
b) I get a mix of grey and one or two copper and paint some white, spray silver so I have a mixture of flats and metallics or all metallic but I like mixing flat with gloss.
I haven't decided on dining chairs but they might have a bronze metallic look. I guess I could always do the pendant cords in a bronze colour to bring in that colour. The pastel lights might only work if I do a more scandinavian style chair but my husband wants something comfortable and quite often they are hard wood.
