Hello, We would agree with the other comments above. There is no rule that you must abide by but generally speaking if you are to have a two toned kitchen, lighter colours for wall cabinets and the darker colour would be used on the base units, as for the tall cabinet this is very much a 50/50 decision. Ok, so I have attached a few pics that I have created on the homebyme website. Pics show the floorplan and a possible room layout. This is to be a kitchen/diner. The space is currently there, it just is 2 separate rooms at the moment and we will be removing walls to create this space. Top wall in pic is 5m, of which will be 3.6 m sliding doors to garden. We originally had island parallel to the run of units along the left side wall. We have now rotated so it is perpendicular to the run of units. Behind island is staircase, underneath which will be fully built in, units to include fridge freezer and larder. The distance I have allowed between the back of the island and the understairs storage is 1.2m, would this be enough should there be someone sitting at a stool, and would I still be able to open a cupboard behind? Any suggestions more than welcome! The left side wall is 4.55m til the doorway, this run of units needs to include sink and cooker and at the end I have put in the pic full height tall unit to hold washing machine and boiler. I would like a bit of symmetry with that run of units, but just been playing about with it tonight! Could this work? Thanks for looking!

We regularly position hobs and sinks to suit different circumstances - for example - in Heathers kitchen the hob suited the island better as they were social people and cooking and entertaining were a key part of the whole room design. In Carolina’s kitchen it was more a bank of tall storage on the perimeter wall with a long peninsula that was ‘where it all happens’ as that suited that whole room area, and their family. In my own kitchen my island is purely for prep and the cooking and sink are both on the perimeter walls ! If you cook really fragrant food - then lots of people who do prefer to vent straight outside via a wall - but sometimes you can vent strait up though a flat roof ! So no one size fits all. It’s s combination of what suits you and your building and circumstances ! Either way - a designer worth their salt will discuss lots of things with you to get the low down on how your kitchen might best work safely, efficiently and to suit you and your family!

Yes, we have! Got a fancy Neff induction hob and with the integrated extractor with a recirc set-up and then an externally venting extractor up on the ceiling neatly tucked away. This got us the coveted building regs sign off and works for us. The (isolator) switch for the fan is at worktop level so easy to whack on when you’re cooking up a storm and want some extra extraction. But tbh we haven’t used ours much, the in-hob one is fine! The extractor is white and really low-profile so it blends into the ceiling, plus it’s closed until you switch it on, so no unsightly venty parts on display day-to-day Let me know if you’d like to see pics...
