Refresh letterbox flap and door knob

Can anyone tell me how to put the shine back on my once gleaming gold letterbox and door knob? It needs more than a polish. Can you spray paint it??

    You say gold but do you mean it's brass?

    I'm assuming it to be a brass finish. Depending on the age it may be plated rather than solid brass. If it's solid brass then with a lot of hard work (using polish and elbow grease) you will get the shine back. To maintain a shine you can polish it weekly like in olden days, or spray lacquer to protect it for a while. I'm sorry but if it's brass plated them your options are to replate, replace, or paint.

    It is a sorry looking brass plated letter box flap.
