Pendants or cans over my island? Your opinions please!!
We are trying to decide whether to do pendants or cans over the island (and if pendants how many.) We currently have 6-6 inch cans in the kitchen as well as a can over the sink and a light fixture over the kitchen table. We are either going to add 4 inch cans or pendants over the island. While I like the concept of pendants, I am worried it will be busy in the kitchen with too many things hanging from the ceiling. (I have never had pendants before.) The can lights we have now are generally sufficient in terms of light, so the pendants will be more for decoration.
Here is a photo of the kitchen floorpan I have drawn circles where the cans will be.
This is a picture of old kitchen. New kitchen will look different, but layout is essentially the same -- island will be a little bigger and have three seats at the end. The cans that are kind of over the island in this photo have been moved to the right. We have not yet chosen a new light fixture for over the table. (My kitchen decorator tells me the fixture we have now doesn't match anything!)

Pendant lights over island bench?
Comments (8)Hello Stella, Okay.. Well I would say that you could have pendants given the size of the room and if you're not having overhead extraction on the island for example... Also there are many other things you can do with an island that doesn't necessarily involve lighting at all.. You might want to hang your pans for example.. It's not a prerequisite to have lighting here. Interested to know what the Tropical garden window splashback is.. but don't forget a pendant can be a cluster configuration of a single drop. They look really gr8 at differing heights and 3 or 5 could be fantastic. In this way you can actually create something bespoke.. Things to consider are that beautiful bulbs that can be a feature in themselves... Scale... Large expansive, vs smaller. Then textures as this can create interest... Also colour... can you pick out the splashback somehow.. You can do this kind of thing with 1 ceiling rose and multiple outlets.. Have interesting cable and hooks... For other ways to illuminate which I can shed some light on... : ) ) no pun intended are wall lighting.. consider something more interesting than a spot or the usual suspects.. : ))...See MoreHelp with pendant light choice for over island

Comments (32)Just another thought...if you are tall go for a counter 950mm from the floor ( or whatever works for your back ) im 5ft 7 ish and that's how tall my cabinets are ( we have 100mm high benches, so that gives extra height..not just the feet on the cabinets ) You don't want to be bending at the wrong height all day Not comfortable....See MoreHELP!! what do I do with my island pendants??
Comments (24)Awww thanks Ellie, I was gutted for you to read about your flooring issues! Yea, the guys have really kept things moving forward. Downstairs Should be painted over the next week, then flooring goes down 18-20th..then they can fit the pocket doors into the frames, then they need to be painted! Then we can get all our furniture back! But next exam is the 3rd :-0 so Proper unpacking will be mostly after that! Need to order new wardrobes and a new bed! Can’t believe how much has happened! In the last few months! Back wall - plan is to get a wooden shelf (probably an upcycled scaffolding board one) for all my many recipe books, which will add some life and colour! 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoMoving the cooktop may cost her pantry and cabinet storage. There is 24" of prep space on the right side and it looks like it's at least close to that on the left. I'd also suggest she look at a downdraft hood, subject to the type of cooktop she is considering. Check out the Miele DA6480 and DA6490. Recessed lights DO make cleaning easier, but pendants add a nice touch and can be installed 32" or a little higher, depending on the style. Try to get pendants that have some kind of glass covering the bottom of the shade for an extra measure of safety.

6 years ago15" of emergency landing space next to the cooktop only leaves 12" of prep space, which is hugely inadequate.
30" of uninterrupted space is the NKBA rule.
Except when combining functions. Then you take the larger of the two spaces and add 12". Combining a prep space and an emergency landing space needs at least 42" to the side of the cooktop.
Why enshrine dysfunction simply because someone adapted to a poor design? A redo is all about the ability to IMPROVE the functionality.
