Timber sash windows

We live in a Victorian terrace and are currently looking into replacing our horrible UPVC windows with timber sash windows.

How often will these need repainting and are there any other maintenance considerations or advice?

Hi, how often your windows will need repainting and maintaining will depend on the location of your windows (the climate and exposure) and the type of paint used on the windows.

Thank you for the link advising on maintenance of timber sash windows, this is very useful and will certainly be referring to it.

Your workshop looks very professional and of a high standard. Unfortunately I live in the midlands, so out of your local area for supply and installation.

Many thanks for the advise, if i need to know anything windows related in the future I know who to ask.

I am sure lots of people will suggest grey but I don't think it suits houses with a mid or dark tones exterior as I think the windows need a little contrast to stand out. I would rather see white or a pale green or taupe. As far as the front door and gable I always think the front door is down to personal choice- you make this stand out by your choice of ironmongery. As for the gable- I would follow other houses in the area

alcove cupboard advice

Just adding better pics of the alcoves. I'm leaning towards having nothing at all in the right hand one. I have a vintage bus blind which will fill the space nicely if I shorten it a bit. On the left I could build an angled cupboard, possibly at the height of the bottom of the windows, which will hide the dvd player et al and have the telly on top, with floating shelves above for bits and pieces. These will do the job of a mantelpiece. Any suggested improvements on that? BTW the sofa will be changed for something less garish when I have the money. In the meantime it is begging for a loose cover! Ive pulled it 1/3 of the way into the room, to allow a run of floor to ceiling bookshelves incorporating a small desk on the wall behind it. Still gotta design and build this! Not sure if this will work in practice, but I thought it would be more restful not to have them looming down at me from the alcoves when I'm watching TV. Plus it puts the sofa nearer the fire.
