Best colours for south east facing kitchen

It will be housed in a new extension, probably flat roof with light coming in from ceiling. 1/3 of the south east facing wall will be floor to ceiling glazed and there will also be a large window (above the sink) in the other part of the south east facing wall, so plenty of light coming in. What colour schemes would work in such a kitchen?

Hello Mrs L. Do you mean what colour schemes for paint, or what colour schemes regarding materials, kitchen doors, flooring etc?

Good point. I mean everything really! Concerned about glare if too bright, but don't want dark doors, and I would like a bit of colour, ie not just black and white.

Both the cool grey of the cabinet and the off white in the tile would suggest to me that anything other than off white is going to be difficult. You could try the pale version of the soft green [something like Dulux Gooseberry Fool 5 or Heritage Green Marl], but I think it will end up looking 'dirty' and not in a good way! Cool colours in a north facing room are not always a mistake - they can feel fresh and expand the space. I would be looking to adding warmth by having more wood. So kitchen chairs and table in something close to the worktop would do it, or even add some panelling if you're feeling adventurous. Adding more texture also helps, such as a 'nubbly' fabric for blinds or curtains, such as Scion Plains 5, but stick to the greys or off whites. I really like what you've chosen so far - don't dilute it, go with it!

Hi Rebecca - can you tell us often you/family will be using the room and what time of the day? If you are east facing then you will get really good light morning and to midday, I'm assuming? If your kids will be using the room, say after school then it would predominately be used evenings and maybe weekends? In which case I would lean more towards a darkish shade such as Hague Blue or De Nimes Farrow and Ball.

I much prefer natural brick to painted. I know the bricks aren’t an exact match but then they are very different eras. Why not tart up the area with plants in pots, some garden ornament and maybe a lovely mirror? Painting the walls will mean you have extra upkeep. The walls will need repainting every few years. If you definitely want to paint the extension wall, then maybe a pale terracotta will sit well with the older wall. Not too dark or it will be dingy. I think white or off white will be maybe too much of a contrast.

So you get the morning sun, lovely. I’ve heard that Timeless by Dulux is a warmer white. It does have a tiny hint of yellow. F&B Pointing looks warm too, as does Little Green Slaked Lime. Get some sample pots and paint onto A4 card and then blue tack them to the walls in different places to get a better idea of how they would look in different lights. Below, in order, is Timeless, Pointing and Slaked Lime.

I think that is a very good question, that I was about to set myself! I have read that such a light can make things a bit blue, so it is best to go with the flow, and use bluish tinged colours. Certainly, the room I am sitting in which faces south-east, looks good with its light blue walls. The trouble is, I am not sure that blue is a good friend of food! What do the others out there think?
