Wood stain

Hi, can you let us know what stain and further treatment was applied to the plain boards (e.g. Any brushing?) to achieve this finish / colour. Thanks

Thank you!From Little Greene I'm currently trying the various shades of Slaked Lime and, French Grey, and Cool Arbour... I also liked Hardwick White, Off-White, etc etc (FnB)... :/ I just can't decide whether the painted stone, ie rough/wobbly texture looks ok darker, or not. Or whether to do frames a mid-greyish tone, with soft white walls...or. just paint the lot white! The frames on the stone wall sides make any shades look different again...

You are more likely to see swirls in the natural colour than if you stain it dark, which in my opinion would be more likely to cover bad sanding up. If you go over the whole floor with a 120 grit paper, it really should be smooth enough for anything. I think also that maybe you're confusing different finishes with showing up imperfections. You mention, stain, varnish and oil, all of which give a different look. I think stain and oil show up imperfections, whereas varnish especially the satin and even better gloss, will lessen imperfections. Stain - just stains, it doesn't seal or finish a floor Oil - can both stain and finish - depending on brand and finish Varnish - can colour and finish. What wear is the floor going to get? How do you intend to clean it? Oil is lovely, but not so 'moppable'. I'd be inclined to suggest a varnish with stain in it personallly.

Hi Neha, thanks a lot! With regards to the floor you are right I will need to wait for the extension, because I wanted to put the ceramic floor that looks like wood, but then we would definitely need the underfloor heating in the kitchen. But if the underfloor heating makes everything too expensive and too long then we would put wooden floor and in that case we might match the whole thing on the whole ground floor. I definitely want the hallway and kitchen to match as you can see the kitchen from the entrance, whether as the sitting room is on the right after a few steps in, and I could always put a brass threshold to split the colours. I guess I will have to suck it up and live with the floor and table not matching for a while (the table is coming in 6 weeks and is the only finish I could agree without me and my husband biting each other's heads off! haha). Thanks a lot and I will post a pic once the bookcase is up next week! E
