What's the best way of attaching fence to improve appearance of walls

Hi, so we are going to be renovating the garden and I want to cover up these horrendous walls and gain a little more privacy.
I was thinking about attaching some fencing to the walls, but I don't want the fence to collapse in a year or so or under a strong wind.
I was initially thing about using decking and screwing it to the walls but I heard this is quite heavy...I'm just trying to work out the best solution. So has anyone done this before and what would you recommend as an effective and aesthetically pleasing solution?

I think rendered walls look great in modern gardens. I'd make a feature of them by painting them and disguising the dodgy bits with a few carefully positioned pot plants! It would look great to attach a small modern fence to the top and a floating bench too. I assume a builder could do this but no idea how!

I would get it re-rendered if possible. Render comes in many colours, including white, so painting would not be necessary. You will need a plasterer or builder to do this, and get them to tidy up the wall (remove that odd higher bit!). It will make such a difference and may even be cheaper than fencing?

I rather like your facade. I would think twice about painting the brickwork, as this would be a maintenance headache, but cleaning it would brighten it up. Otherwise stucco and paint the front ( brickwork) only? i would clad your existing canopy in lead, but leep the existing shape. Is the tarmac yours? If you could change this to something lighter and softer, this would have a really big impact. Clad the stairs in slate or indian sandstone, get rid of the block screen and replace with glass, ( marine grade stainless steel fittings and door furniture) black iron railing for the steps.

Hi :-) I'm blushing, because of Karen from OnePlan's comment :-) But here goes: fairly simple and I'm guessing not too expensive would be changing the front door for a modern (oak) one, adding a modern awning above the front door, and painting the pebble dash a warm white, improving the path to the front door and painting the red brick retaining wall a dark grey (same as stairs) or white. I would also add planting. At some point in the future I'd change the trellis below the decking for a more modern version with vertical or horizontal slats and replace the railing with a glass version or a metal version (but I'm not sure if that is allowed by building regulations in the UK because of the horizontal steel wires).

As I say, I can't reconcile the dimensions. There appears to be a 2ft ( roughly ) discrepancy across the width of the house. ie, if the kitchen is 22ft long, then I can't make the lounge, Hallway and study fit in to that measurement. The lounge and study add up to 19ft, which would leave 3ft for the Hallway and staircase, so that wouldn't work, and something is amiss. Also, the study is down as 1.45m which isn't 7'10".......I had to make it a rough guide! So, this is what i'd go for as a plan b, following the initial amendment upstairs.................If you did the extension.............it would look roughly like this:- I managed to fix the dimensions, so later i'll put them back on Plan A x

Hello folks. Thank you for your replies. Its private land. We live on an Estate. We do have lots of big trees around us and wouldn't want to block the beautiful view. We have 2 little apple trees that have such lovely blossom at the moment. We nearly went with Leylandil to hedge all the way round but glad we didn't due to its reputation and problems we would probably get. What we had in mind was something that would grow in and on the fence but no higher and to block the dogs (we have 2 huge dogs) view. Like a screen. We wanted something that smells nice as we are going to try and make this area into a relaxing dining area eventually so sweet smells would be lovely of an evening. The fenced off part is our garden which is just under an acre but very big, boring and a huge task to landscape. We have tried planting some flowers Lupins, Roses, a Magnolia Tree etc but the dogs have crushed some of the Lupins. You might just see them in the picture I attached. We are going to stop with the plants and go for the fence climbers. Eventually all the way round. I put some pics up of what we have to deal with landscaping wise. Alot of work to do. Its only windy in Autumn and Winter. We have bought some Jasmins and Clematis for some of the fence. Love the yellow ones. You live somewhere really beautiful but it does look windy there. Probably alot more windy than here by the looks of it. I have never seen those before. I will most definitely try out a few along the fence somewhere. Thank you. Lots of things keep changing while trying to do this garden and its been quite expensive trying it out but fun and we will carry on. I think what we're looking for is a hardy beautiful fragrant fast fence climber that will block the fence part but not above it that can handle some wind and lots of sun all day 😁

Agree re rendering would be best. I assumed it would cost loads not sure why!

Paint it and add some trellis on top. There was a episode of the Instant Gardener ( still available on BBC iPlayer) which he made over a concrete back yard. He also added big troughs and pots as well as artificial turf!

Hi Steve, Sounds like a rewarding project. I think once you've covered the blemishes in the wall some horizontal cedar cladding would look really stunning on top. You could also use this as a framework for training climbers such as jasmine or clematis over it.
