Ipe decking

I love the natural ipe with the black accents in the first picture in your portfolio. The ipe in this picture looks like it is stained. Was it was taken earlier before it turned silver? Or is it the lighting?

Hi,

It was just cleaned and oiled. Stays that colour for a while then it fades back to grey again.

I would have suggested wood or the more durable composite timber alternative. Composite timber decking looks fantastic, it's got a long guarantee period and is low maintenance. Built on the same framework as a timber deck I think it looks better and will withstand the weather well - there are so many more suppliers now that I think it is a competitive solution.

Sikkens , Owatrol or Ronseal all make excellent products for decking, there are plenty of colours to choose from to compliment your conservatory. Personally, if the deck is one of the good hardwoods, Balau, Ipe, Iroko or Elondo I prefer an oil such as Liberon but oil may need to be reapplied more often.

I would say the deck in your sample is Ipe or Elondo, woods so hard and dense they don't float, the grain doesn't look like pine. Pine will suck up more oil on the first coat and it is important to coat the underside with a wood preserver to protect it from rot. Oil is also a lot less durable so it will need to be maintained more than other finishes although the look and some of the colours that Liberon offer are fantastic. Have a look at some of the newer acrylic finishes, they have a different look to traditional oil based varnishes and can be extremely tough and UV resistant but nothing that performs well is going to be cheap unless you can find somewhere with a deal on offer.

Hi Katrina, You may find it useful to look at the below. For decking: If you're on a budget: Tanilised Pine decking The mid-range option: Hardwoods such as Garapa or Balau The high-end option: IPE almost Indestructible but very expensive. You could also look at man-made or composite decking I have heard good things about Wallbarns composite decking, although I have never used it myself. They are also a good contact if you are looking to make a Green roof. I normally advise people to go for Balau as It is very hard wearing and not extortionately expensive. Last time I bought it I got a good price from E Roberts but that was over a year ago. For Cladding: If you are going for timber I would look at Cedar or larch. If you have a bit more to spend look at Green oak or sweet chestnut. I have not cladded anything for years and I know there are various new types of treated cladding boards which may be more cost effective. Try looking up Thermowood. Hope this helps. Ed
