Hi! These floors are beautiful! What is the stain and type of wood?

These were laminate floor planks.

Hello Tom, It's a good one and means I can't vote as I have a Jackboot in both camps! (which you haven't allowed for) Paint is soo fantastic and I tend to think colour rather than white..but... that's only because I have had white floors for 10 years.. so need a change... Stain is gr8 if you want to go dark and have a grainy feel... Dark wood paint too is fantastic.. especially electric blue and other wonderments... So it really does depend on the aesthetic preference and what else is happening in the room... : ))

@queenofsuccess - I'm getting a better picture now, so we are looking for something that would keep the design in the contemporary brackets, but with a good dollop of homely warmth right? How about if you had the cream tiles around the kitchen area only, so from the white cabinets to the island, then from the brown ladder units to the island too and around it, so that the stools are on tiles. Sort of like a pavement, that would clearly separate the clean kitchen area from a nice hardwood floor in the rest of the room? In this case I would choose the colour of the wooden floor to contrast with white kitchen and cream tiles, but also to work with the walnut ladder units. I know you said your husband would like something light and I can totally understand him there. Light colours would definitely make the room brighter. When it comes to warmth I would suggest a nice oak panel, something along the lines of this: It is quite a challenge to make your idea work flawlessly. We have white kitchen units with near white worktops, part of the floor in cream tiles, walnut kitchen units and you want a fairly light hardwood floor to bring warmth into the room. I think that the only way to solve it well, would be if you could provide as much information on the final decor you want to achieve, the size of the room, natural light sources (i.e. windows, doors etc.), so we can try to find a best fit that will blend in with everything and work for you. Sanding/Staining wood floor

I know what you mean about the scratches and it’s hard to get across in the photos but there are scratches which we have done deliberately which look great and then there are strange marks which look shiny - my thinking is that our sanding wasn’t done well. I tried wax and oil finishes on a sample board and neither look great. We are open to doing it again or just getting someone professional in to do it, thanks for your thoughts!

@ House 2 Home Design - The simple answer to that question is no. If the floor is installed correctly with the necessary expansion gaps at the perimeters then there should be no problem. Problems do occur when an expansion gap is not installed and this can causes the floor to swell upwards as the wood expands. It should be noted that the size of the gap differs from product to product and is concealed by the skirting. Another mistake which causes problems with solid wood floors is where the skirting is fixed to the wooden floor without leaving any tolerance and this prevents the wood from expanding and again causes the floor to swell upwards. It should also be noted that even with an engineered wooden floor an expansion gap should always be allowed. With regards to humidity, it is not that great in a kitchen area on a constant basis and I have installed solid wood flooring to rooms that are adjacent to swimming pools; now that is a high humidity situation! :-) In the case of very high quality solid wood floor installations I have often stuck the floor to a plywood sub-floor, however this is not a common requirement for standard residential projects.
